Twitter Tells – Dodgers Sign Alfredo Amezaga

Twitter Tells – Dodgers Sign Alfredo Amezaga

Its been reported that the Dodgers further added to their bench today signing Alfredo Amezaga to a minor league deal. The deal is said to be worth $650k if he makes the team with incentives that can raise his salary to $850k. This all comes via Ken Rosenthal on Twitter.

Well this throws a wrench into the roster discussions going on here at the previous post.

I believe someone said in that thread that “it takes a village.” Well, we are certainly equipped now. Plenty of backups for the stuntmen crew with Amezaga joining Reed Johnson, Jamey Carroll, and Ronnie Belliard. Amezaga plays all over the field, he has literally played every position except for pitcher and catcher. He is best in center and at short I have heard.

Also, this just in, Dylan Hernandez reports via Twitter that the Dodgers would like to bring Jeff Weaver back but that our “roster situation” may prevent us from doing so.

What does everyone think the lineup will look like now?

Twitter Tells: Here’s What Ned Did Next

Twitter Tells: Here’s What Ned Did Next

We learned today, from Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times and Ken Gurnick of MLB.com that the Dodgers signed Ronnie Belliard to what appears to be an $825k one year deal. The deal is said to also have about $250k in incentives, which pushes the deal over the million dollar mark.

We also learned that the Dodgers have apparently also signed Brand Ausmus to a one year deal believed to be close to the million dollar mark, via Buster Olney on Twitter.

I feel that Belliard has always been a professional hitter that can play good defense from time to time as well. He performed admirably last season batting .351 while with the Dodgers. His season average was around .277 so it is very clear that hitting in the mighty Dodgers lineup was a huge advantage.

Here is another reason why I like this deal. After watching the team from the field, dugout, and locker room last season as the representative of LADodgerTalk.com I got to see how much the other players really enjoyed his antics. To be more specific, Manny, Furcal, and Belliard were like the three musketeers! Its their culture and passion for baseball that bind these Latin all-stars. And I guarantee that Manny and Furcal have just improved a notch in 2010 because they will have this “Mini-Manny” with his jovial antics and mouth full of food constantly around all season.

This move makes us very versatile and deep with our infield, which I have learned is very important over the long season.

The Ausmus signing was great too. He also hit admirably in limited time as a backup last season. He hit .295 in about 107 at bats. His biggest assets to the team are the veteran leadership and defense. I think that Martin will get more rest this season as well. Even though Martin cut down his innings caught he still lead the league and there has to be some fatigue factor there. Although seeing Martin in the locker room I can tell you that he is VERY good shape, ripped with muscle head to toe. But catching an entire season is enough to make even Lance Armstrong fold.

More importantly on the Ausmus signing was that the Giants and the Padres got denied! So plus plus on the Ausmus deal!

Looks like good ole Ned was a very busy boy today!

UPDATE: Dodgers.com JUST now broke the story on Belliard. Still not official report on Ausmus but I am sure it is coming soon, as Gurnick states in his Belliard story.

June 23, 2009 – Dodgers vs. Chi Sox – Sans Mover

June 23, 2009 – Dodgers vs. Chi Sox – Sans Mover

    Tonight’s Lineup:

    Juan Pierre, LF
    Rafael Furcal, SS
    Orlando Hudson, 2B
    Casey Blake, 3B
    Andre Ethier, RF
    Russell Martin, C
    Matt Kemp, CF
    James Loney, 1B
    Mitch Jones, DH

The Dodgers enter Chi Town again but this time to face the White Sox of the AL. We have never won a game at US Cellular field and are 2-9 lifetime against the White Sox. Looks like we will make it 3-9 as we are leading 3 to 1 on my man Loney’s long awaited power surge! I guess Torre planned it that way, by dropping him to the 8 hole, and that’s why he is the manager and I am not.

Kuroda is looking fine with only 78 pitches through 7 innings and 6 Ks!!! Looks like he is back and in his groove with a 2 hitter. He has typically been a pitcher that will go deep into games and was a horse in Japan. I think that he can be a huge innings eater for us the rest of the season.

We finish Interleague play this weekend against the Mariners of Seattle, to which we can all expect a steady dose of “… what if…. Adrian Beltre …… what if from the Mover once he is off the loopy meds. His wife told me that he did in fact label his hip with “wrong one” in case the surgeon forgot!

June 18, 2009 Dodgers Take Series Against Oakland!

June 18, 2009 Dodgers Take Series Against Oakland!

    press-box

Well, there was a rather large crowd of 50,492 on hand tonight, with 4000+ walk-ups (a season record). That makes the free parking promotion at Chavez Ravine a raving success in my book. But I have not crunched the numbers on that.

Randy Wolf’s cough did not appear to affect him too much, if at all, as he went 6 innings with 4 walks and only 3 Ks. Not super but it kept us in the game.

Hudson hit a 400+ft solo shot to center and Pierre added an RBI single in the 5th to allow Wolf to leave the game with a 2-1 lead. And….. that’s when the shenanigans started!

A strange play in the top of the 7th led to an A’s run to tie the game at 2-2. Pierre charged a bloop down the line that dropped in front of him, which I thought he could have caught with a dive. But it dropped and Furcal was there and appeared to instruct Pierre to throw the ball in to second base. The only problem is that Oakland’s Rajai Davis rounded third and came home to score while Pierre’s throw lofted into second, where Nomar (who hit the single) easily slid in safe at second.

This, once again, left Wolf with a no decision as the game was tied. Wolf now has 11 no decisions in 15 starts this year and was in line for the win in 11 of those! Talk about tough luck, but hey, winning is more important anyways.

We got the run back in the bottom of that inning on a clutch pinch hit single by Mark Loretta to score Loney from second. However, the throw to the plate trying to get Loney was cut off and Martin was caught in a run down and tagged out with Loretta advancing to second. And Pierre struck out swinging to end that inning.

Troncoso got the final two outs, taking the ball from Belisario in 9th inning for the save, giving the Dodgers the series victory!

    June 18, 2009 – Waiting and Waiting

    June 18, 2009 – Waiting and Waiting

    june-18-field

Its 6:15 pm as I type this and the Dodgers still have not given anyone in the press box tonight’s Dodgers lineup. Not sure what the deal is but its creating a bit of a stir here. I wonder what Torre is up to?

nomar-oaklandUnfortunately for all of us I was stuck in the worst traffic on the way to the game from San Diego and was very late (4:45). Too late to catch Torre for a pre-game talk.

I did catch BP and Ethier hitting the snot out of the ball once again. The ball just jumps off of his bat and has a crisp sound. One can tell its him hitting without even looking in the direction of the cage.

Nomar seemed very happy to be back in LA. He came over to the Dodgers side and into the stands near where the McCourts sit.

I caught Casey Blake giving lip service to Matt Holiday during hollidayDodgers BP. Holiday was sitting directly behind the cage enjoying the sunshine. Hmmm, maybe he’s contemplating what playing on the Dodgers would feel like? Hey Holiday, it feels like victory!

Tonight is the last night of the free parking promotion, that seems to have been a great success. There were 3,841 walk-ups last night. That’s the second highest of the year and second only to the Ethier batting practice jersey give away night (3,933). At least Ethier is clutch when it comes to promotions (think Carne Asade Sunday with Dre)!

So this is the rubber match of our series with the lowly Athletics of Oakland. We are 4-4 in Interleague play so far this season, which is good…. for us. We are 94-105 lifetime in Interleague play.

The Dodgers have won 7 of their last 10 series finales and are 13-8 overall in the last game of a series. So the numbers are with us tonight. However, we are 0-2 in games I have attended as a member of the press. I may not come anymore if that streak continues! Overall we have won 17 of 21 series this season.

Martin has thrown out 13 runners this season, tops in the NL and tied for first in all of MLB behind Gerald Laird. The staff ERA of 3.34 when Martin is behind the plate is tops in the league and Martin also leads the league in innings caught this season with 499. Tired? Probably. Washed up? Probably not! Martin also launched his own site today, www.RussellMartin55.com, so feel free to get anything you want to off of your chest by leaving him a comment here. :-)

mitch-jones-waitingMitch Jones will hopefully get some PT tonight, he really lights up the stands here. It would be great to see him hit one out tonight. I have to say that he is not a big guy, even though he is a power hitter.

Check him out waiting his turn in the cages tonight. Duncan is only about a foot and a half shorter than Duncan while on one knee!

June 16th 2009, Dodgers Win on Walk Off by Kemp

June 16th 2009, Dodgers Win on Walk Off by Kemp

Fantastic game tonight, if you’re a Dodgers fan. The Dodgers overcame a great performance by Athletic’s rookie Dallas Braden. who seemed to have our number early on. Until consecutive doubles by Blake and Loney got us ahead 2 – 0.

Clayton Kershaw struggled but battled his way through five and two-thirds of rough innings to give him a pitch count of 105, BUT no earned runs. Ramon Troncoso torched the joint giving up 4 earned runs in two-thirds of an inning.

In the 8th inning The Foundation had an RBI single and later scored a run to tie the game at 4-4. Read the full story

    June 10, 2009 – Kershawshanked

Well, another tough outing for Clayton Kershaw tonight. He lasted just 2.2 innings, threw 83 pitches, 5 hits, 3 earned, 4 walks, and 2 Ks. Again, the walks are killing him, although he was hit pretty well too. To me it looked as though the pitch selections were a bit off but when the location is too it makes for disaster.

    Hong Chi Kuo Pitching Again???

Diamond Lueng reports today that Hong Chi Kuo was seen pitching again…

Maybe Subway subs are part of his rehab regimen/diet? And what’s with the 69 jersey? Diamond says its the cost of the sub in Korea, and its the equivalent of $2 US. Subway is ripping americans, we have to pay $5!!!

I’ll be at the game tonight so follow our Twitters either in the sidebar here on the site or at Twitter, http://twitter.com/ladodgertalk.

    Dr. Hiroki and Mr. Kuroda

    Dr. Hiroki and Mr. Kuroda

Kuroda looked good velocity and movement wise, hitting 93 consistently with an 83 mph change. However, he struggled with control a bit while trying to knock the rust off. Or, as Badger would put it, “he’s serving belt high lollipops.” He ran his pitch count pretty high early with 45 pitches in two innings, 32 of those in the second inning. It’s that second inning wildness that killed him. The two walks that inning came in to score on the double by rookie Josh Whitesell.

Overall a good start for his first game back since opening day. He exceeded Torre’s pitch count mandate by one, going 86 pitches in 5 innings with 2ER/3Hits/3Walks/6Ks.

June 1, 2009 Pre Game Notes

I just got back from the dugout and Torre’s pregame media pow wow. Some updates for today’s game.

Kuroda will be limited to around 80-85 pitches today. He was brought up, despite a poor rehab outing in the minors, because his arm appears good and he said he was ready to go. Torre noted that Kuroda has always been honest about his health and that factored in too. And Kersahw is ready to go in case Kuroda falters. Read the full story

    Dodgers Bench Raking

    Dodgers Bench Raking

I was looking at my fantasy baseball gameday for today’s game at Florida when I noticed something shocking. What is out of place in the image below?
    dodgers-box

.344, .381, .500, .438!!! Those are the batting averages of our bench players so far this season. INSANE! Excuse me for my enthusiasm but that is just freakish, and the incredible thing about that is that Xavier Paul hit a pinch home run in today’s game, currently rain delayed in top of the ninth.

Speaking of rain delays, my wife commented when passing by my laptop and seeing the torrential downpour going on at the game, “why don’t the Marlins have a roof?” Even someone that does not know that a foul ball is counted as a strike (with less than 2 strikes) can understand that a baseball team in Florida needs a roof! Oh well, all 1000 fans in attendance tonight had to scurry for cover.

How many games do you think our bench will win us this season?

Manny Suspended 50 Games For Testing Positive

Manny Suspended 50 Games For Testing Positive

    Et Tu, Manny?

It is being reported by various sources including the LA Times that Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and will be suspended for 50 games! No comments from the Dodgers, Boras, the player’s union, or Major League Baseball yet. It is believed, by an anonymous source, that Manny will attest the positive result to medication received by his doctor for a “personal ailment.”

Major league baseball does not allow players in violation of their drug policy to be paid during suspensions. This will result in a 31% pay cut for Manny, equating to roughly $7.7 million of his $25 million salary. Read the full story

    Beating The Giants Was Nice

    jackie13The Good

It was Jackie Robinson Day and he was dutifully honored around the entire league yesterday. One of the best parts of last night’s game was hearing Vin Scully recall a memory of Jackie. The Dodgers had the team and staff out to the Catskills for a retreat of sorts. It was winter and so Jackie told Vin that he would ice skate with him. Upon hitting the ice it was apparent to Vin that Robinson had never ice skated before. But that did not stop Jackie from challenging Vin to a race! Vin reminded Jackie that he obviously could not skate. To which Jackie replied, well that is how I am going to learn! Such a competitive fire burned inside of that man!

And there was also a gem put in by Clayton Kershaw who went a strong seven with 13 strikeouts, only 1 walk, only one hit, and oh yeah 1 run. But other than that this was actually an ugly game. Again, I love beating the Giants so I was very pleased at the end of the night. But the Giants gave the game to us more than we took it from them. We held it together just enough to stick around and watch the Giants walk us in another run in the ninth for a walk-off, RBI walk. Loney had ZERO hits but 3 RBIs!

    The Bad

Dodgers hitters were 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position. We scattered 13 hits over 9 innings to score 5 runs. But only two of those 13 hits scored runs for us, the other 3 runs came on 2 bases loaded walks (both to Loney) and a sac fly (also from Loney). So our player of the game offensively had no hits last night! We stranded a dismal 12 runners while the Giants left only one man hanging. Belisario serves up an 0-2 fastball for a 3-run homer to give the Giants a good lead, ruining Kershaw’s gem.

    The Ugly

Kuo has not looked good so far and continues that theme with another poor outing, even though he is getting plenty of rest and not pitching on consecutive days. Kuo hits a batter, gives up a single, and good night. Belisario comes in and quickly works up an 0-2 count. But wait, then he serves up a tater for a 3-run homer and voila! Blown save! Don’t get me wrong, he is still filthy, but he any pitcher in the bigs needs to know that the 0-2 pitch has to be down and off the plate. Did I mention that we were 1 for 7 with runners on base last night? How about the fact that we stranded 12?

250px-dodgers_logoBut hey, we won the game and that is what really matters. As much as the Giants handed it to us we still had to be there with our hands open to receive it. Loney’s patience at the plate and a sac fly were all setup by hits or walks ahead of him. Kemp extended his hitting streak and the guys that were supposed to hit Cain well did just that. Broxton looked sharp again too with 2 Ks in one inning for the win! And Clayton was just fun to watch. He looks like Hershiser and throws like Koufax!

He was throwing cartoon stuff up there, reminded me of the filthy-ness of Gagne back in the day. I mean guys were just shaking their heads and walking away from the plate last night. That kid really put it all together last night and his head is screwed on so straight as well! He commented that he was most proud of the fact that he was able to go 7 innings, more so than the strikeouts, because the team needs that from starters and the pen was getting overworked. And finally even a little swagger from the humble kid, saying he felt good enough to go 8 and that it would have been no big deal!

But he was quick not to have people mix those sentiments with the idea that he no longer trusts the pen, who have lost him the “W” twice already this season.

“If Kuo is coming in with a one-run lead, I’ll trust him every time,” said Kershaw. “As a setup man, I wouldn’t want anybody else. It’s just one of those games.”

I want to also point out the Kershaw was striking most hitter out on high fastballs in the 88-91 mph range and was BLOWING them buy big league hitters! His curve is so devastating, breaking 3-4 feet at 69-75 mph, that it makes his fastball look like its 99 mph! His delivery looks a bit deceptive too, like Kuo’s. It kind of looks like he short arms it so the ball just explodes out of his body and catches hitters off balance.

    • Looks like Kuroda will be away a bit longer than initially thought, probably 2-3 weeks out it appears.
    • That means that McDonald may get more looks as a starter than was initially presumed. Troncoso, that gives you more time up in The Show.
    • Schmidt threw 7 innings in extended spring training but will need much more time as rehab starts are definitely in order. I’d give it a month or so before he’s ready for a call up.
    • Game Time tonight: Los Angeles (6-3) vs. San Francisco (2-6), 7:10 p.m. PT. Eric Stults (1-0, 1.69 ERA) faces Barry Zito (0-1, 9.00 ERA) so I like our chances for a sweep. But we have to cash runners in!

Game Time: Cain and an Able Kershawshankredemption

It is important to note that although we trounced them already we still have to beat our division and arch rivals again tonight! In a reversal of fortunes from Monday’s opposing pitcher, Matt Cain is tonight’s started and is 0-6 in 11 carreer starts against DD (Dem Dodgers :-) ). So as “stats” would tell us, we have a good shot at making it 0-7. Not because of history but rather because of, dare I say it, DESTINY. Clayton Kershaw toes the rubber tonight and that has me all warm and fuzzy inside.

dodgersKershaw pitched well in his 2009 debut against the Padres, except he ran his pitch count up over 100 by the fifth inning! He will try to avoid that and stay on the current pace of 7 innings from our starter. Our staff HAS to pitch aggressively and pitch as if we have a 7-0 lead. They HAVE to do that everytime out! Bills commented that he felt alot better with the lead and that allowed him to challenge hitters and be more aggressive.

Well then Bills, you need to pitch that way with that mindset more often!! And I think that goes for all of our outstanding young arms. Trust your stuff and go after people, that is what most likely got you here so stick with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All of these walks, high pitch counts, and early exits by our young guys so far is indicative of the idea that they are not being aggressive enough in the strike zone.

Andre Ethier OWNS Matt Cain and owns may be an understatement… 16 for 27 with a double and a triple for a .593 average. And Matt Cain OWNS Orlando Hudson who is 0-fer-18. Furcal is batting .368 and Kemp .316 lifetime against Cain. So let’s watch out for another potential offensive explosion tonight.

    Some baseball notes:

    • Pee wee the Pirate, Argh! The Dodgers traded switch-hitting outfielder Delwyn Young to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday for two players to be named later or cash considerations. I’m told cash considerations typically amount to about $50,000.
    • The way I see it…. Broxton closes, Wade and Kuo are his primary setup guys, Ohman the lefty specialist, Belisario the primary 6th inning guy with Mota filling in when needed, and Troncoso the long man. But when Hiroki comes back McDonald slips into Troncoso’s spot which lands him in AAAA Albaquacky.
    • Reports are that X Nady is out for the season! Paging Mr. Swisher, Mr. Swisher to the triage unit please.
    • Favortie post so far this season, 55 Reasons to Hate the Giants. I commented there with a couple of my own reasons, check it out.
