10-14-07 - BRAD PENNY NOW LONGEST TENURED DODGER
Hernandez, Hillenbrand and Saenz are no longer Dodgers according to Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com & Tony Jackson of The Daily News. My only question is “What took so long?” This leave Brad Penny as the Dodger with the longest tenure. Amazing!
In other news, the Juan Pierre move to LF is underway, but for all the criticism aimed at Juan Pierre’s play this year, his offensive production — .293 average, .331 on-base percentage, 96 runs scored — was just a shade under his career average and his 64 stolen bases were 10 higher than his average. Defensively, however, the disregard for Pierre’s throwing arm in center field is so widespread that extra bases taken by the opposition demoralize Dodgers pitchers. After the season finale, Pierre was asked if he was open to moving to left field and didn’t sound thrilled with the idea.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” he said. “I don’t know.”
Asked if he would be more willing to move if he was making room for a Gold Glove center fielder like Andruw Jones, he said:
“We’ll see. He’s probably the best center fielder in the game. I’m not to his caliber.”
Pierre said he played left field while in the Colorado Minor League system when Choo Freeman was the center fielder. - From Ken Gurnick of Dodgers.com
Spring Training update: (from the same Article)
Dodgers management has gone underground on the issue of the club’s Spring Training move from Vero Beach, Fla. to Glendale, Ariz.
The move was announced effective for the 2009 exhibition season, but ground still has not been broken on the Glendale complex the Dodgers are to share with the Chicago White Sox. The clubs are hoping a governmental meeting in Glendale on Tuesday will clear the way for the start of construction.
Meanwhile, the uncertainty has left Vero Beach officials hamstrung as they try to negotiate with other Major League teams interested in moving into the Dodgertown training complex. Vero Beach cannot make any deal until it knows whether the Dodgers will need the facility for 2009.
PERSONNEL NOTES
Farm director DeJon Watson reports that pitchers Scott Elbert (who had an operation to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. He’s on track but isn’t expected to see any game action until spring training), and Bryan Morris (elbow) are recovering from operations without setbacks and are participating in the Arizona Instructional League. He said Elbert has started tossing, while Morris (who had Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery late last year) is throwing 93 mph. Tim Hamulack, who had Tommy John surgery this year, also has begun playing catch.

Ivan DeJesus, Jr. had planned on another winter spent in the league that plays in his native Puerto Rico. That league won’t be operating at all so the Dodgers put him on the list to play in the Arizona Fall League. That league has begun play but DeJesus won’t be a part of it. The Puerto Rican League had to be put on hold because of financial concerns so the shortstop started working out again for Arizona play. In the course of that, though, he fractured a finger which required an operation to set properly. He’s in Arizona but with the rehab group that’s recovering in the Peoria Complex so there won’t be any playing time for him likely until next spring. Chin-lung Hu replaced him with the Peoria Saguaros. Righthander Garey Parris and catcher Jessie Mier are also rehabbing. Parris had shoulder surgery and has advanced far enough that he’s thrown bullpen sessions. Mier, a 12th-round draft pick from Lewis & Clark State. fractured his left hand shortly after the Pioneer League season got going. There’s also righthander Jimmy Gilbert, who has managed a grand total of two-thirds of an inning, since signing as a draft-and-follow back in 2005. He threw 98 mph while an amateur but had the Tommy John procedure immediately upon reporting since his injury happened while in college. He is alos throwing. Tommy Perez and Jumbo Diaz, have been sent back to Campo Las Palmas to continue their rehabilitation and hopefully to eventually get into some games down there. Perez is getting over a fractured right elbow whole Jumbo’s trips to the operating table to repair his elbow are starting to rival Hong-Chih Kuo’s in number. Righthander Danny Muegge, who missed the whole season after shoulder surgery, is working out at home while lefthander Brent Leach. |
