MARCH 12th GAME

Los Angeles 7, Houston 0

VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Eric Gagne stepped in to pitch an inning for the second time this spring and starter Brett Tomko threw five scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Houston Astros 7-0 on Sunday. Gagne replaced Tomko in the sixth inning, throwing change-ups and fastballs to strike out two batters and walk a third. He allowed a single — his first hit of the spring. “I was fluid today but I didn’t throw enough strikes,” Gagne said, adding he still needed to refine his pitching mechanics. Gagne, recovering from a torn ligament in his right elbow, said diagnosing rough spots is part of a positive progression. Physically, he feels fine. “It’s not a step back, it’s a step forward. When you don’t do good, that’s when you go in and make adjustments,” Gagne said. “You’ve got to learn from it, and you’ve got to know where your mechanics are and what you need to do to make that adjustment.” Gagne, who debuted in the Grapefruit League against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, threw only five pitches to retire the side in the fifth inning. Dodgers manager Grady Little said he was pleased with Gagne’s performance against the Astros. “We’re still at a point in time where we’re just mainly concerned with him busting loose all the adhesions that could be left in there from his injury, and I think that’s about done,” Little said. “He pitched some outstanding change-ups and threw some good quality fastballs there.”

ANEW BLUE DAY & MOUNTAINMOVER HEAD TO VERO

Anew and I will be Vero Beach from March 21-28, 2006.  Updates and photos will be forthcoming every day we are there.  We will give you the real scoop - Don’t believe the fish hacks, believe us!

I HAVE 3 QUESTIONS - WHO’s ON 1B, LF & C?

Wait, that’s 1 question on 3 positions.  I am a proponent of the argument that Jose Cruz, Jr.,  Ricky Ledee & Jason Repko are all good spare OF’s.  Sorry Cody Ross-there’s just no room (in fact, I am not sure we can carry 6 outfieldsers anyway).  Assuming we keep 6 OF’s, who is our LF?   Some fans are championing Andre Ethier and maybe he’s a good choice, but my opinion is that he’s not the one.  Here’s what I see happening:

1.  Joel Guzman will be our LF.  Yes’ he’s young, he’s raw, he strikes out a lot, he hasn’t played much LF, but he’s powerful and he is entering his 6th professional year.  He might hit .250 with 35 HR and 180 K’s - would that be terrible from the #6 or #7 spot in the batting order?

2.  James Loney is playing very well.  He is a Gold Glove Caliber 1B - to me he looks like a natural.  Could he push Nomar to LF?  If he keeps up his hitting, how can he be ignored?

3.  Martin is pushing Navarro - no predictions here… yet!

All I am saying is that Guzman, Loney and Martin are trying to play their way onto the team.   Conversely, Young, Aybar and others are playing their way off!
