Its time to clear the bench and let the stars rest and the backups get some ABs: Bennett for Martin, Sweeney for Loney, Young for Kent (the kid has to play somewhere), Jones for Kemp, LaRoche for DeWitt (sorry, I couldn’t resist on that last one).
Is that everybody? Last one out turn off the scoreboard.
Too bad Kuo wasn’t available today too. Where’s that reliever Kershaw when we needed him? I understand why Penny got more rope than Kuroda, but overall Torre seems to stick with his starters too long when they are struggling, something I didn’t expect given his reputation for wearing out relievers with the Yanks. Wade would seem to have been available to go several innings, as was Park, especially with tomorrow off.
New rules–no more Lowe at Colorado, and no more Penny against the Mets. Kuo pitches EVERY game against the Mets.
Proctor has terrific “stuff”. He really does, I’m sure that’s why Torre uses him as a 7th inning reliever along with Beimel, (who, by the way has really surprised me with his effectiveness this year. Last year I thought he was just another one of those “crafty” lefties with no fastball who were only good enough to get a situational left handed hitter out. But he’s been aces this year as a 7th inning man).
But despite his excellent fastball, hard biting slider, 12-6 snapping curve and effective change–he can’t control any of them consistently. Some days he’s manna from heaven. Other days, he’ll get lit up like Tommy Lasorda pitching batting practice. Until he can paint the black on the outside corner at the knees on a 3-2 pitch with the bags loaded, he’ll never be a pitcher I feel confident about coming into a game with everything on the line.
He’s the opposite of that Kuo kid who has dynamite stuff and location. Kuo is probably the best long reliever I’ve ever seen. Hell, it’s a crying shame his arm has gone through so many surgeries. He could be the second coming of Sandy Koufax if he could pitch 7 innings every fifth day without his arm falling off.
Very nice outing for Park. I was hoping he would get in yesterday instead of Broxton. That would make one interesting box score: Kuroda, Kuo, Park, Saito.
Speaking of the Dodgers’ strong Asian presence, I got to thinking the other day about something else very significant about their roster–I wonder if they lead the league in the number of African-American players? (Then there is Martin, who obviously is Canadian, not American, since he is not a lazy American catcher according to Saito.)
Sadder-but-Loazia should be released outright along with Judy Jones.
I think Billingsely is our #1 right now. Penny, Lowe and Kuroda all seem to be having problems throwing “outs”. Can’t keep the opposition from fouling off strikes until they either walk or get a pitch to clobber.
Our bullpen is fine. With the best long reliever maybe in history, Beimel, Broxton and Saito are pitching lights out. If Torre stays away from Proctor until he learns to command at least one of his many pitches we’re fine if we can get through six innings with the lead.
Why not bring up Kershaw and give Loaiza his walking papers? Couldn’t hoit could it?
Mere coincidence. Surely you’re not suggesting that having Judy’s .160 average in the lineup makes us a better team than having Ethier’s .300 average in the lineup?
Both are great defensively.
To say Judy’s presence in the lineup causes us to win is like saying my argument with a friend over Obama’s competence caused it to rain. Hell, it rains all the time up here.
The Dodgers will win 50 games and lose 50 games this year. That’s a sure thing. What they do with the other 62 will make or break them. Having Judy in the lineup with a .160 average and one hr as opposed to Ethier’s bat and power will not help us win any of those other 62 games.
(m)ark, I’d guess that Lowe’s history of problems at Coors Field and Penny’s poor lifetime record against the Mets are more significant in those cases than Ethier starting those games. Ethier actually homered in the game against the Rockies, but that couldn’t overcome Lowe walking four and giving up five earned runs in five innings.
On the other hand, the Dodgers have not lost a single game in which DeWitt homered
Now that I’ve finally figured out how to navigate this board, I’ve got to say you’ve done a terrific job here Mover. It’s a great place to waste time when the Dogs are losing and you just can’t bear to watch anymore…
Tony Jackson’s blog says Loiza is going on the DL, and he guesses that Park will get his start the next time around. Hu (excuse me, who) replaces him, LaRoche or Kershaw? Who’s the new starter–Park, Kuo, or Kershaw? Inquiring minds want to know.
Hmmm… Unless Furcal’s back is worse than suggested by Vinny today, methinks Kershaw might be about to get a looksee and his first major league cup of coffee.
OUCH–12-0 in the sixth.

Is Proctor secretly injured?
Proctor has been at 93-95 on the gun…
but he’s not always effective.

The last two games the Ethier has started in place of Jones, we have lost.
Last 12 games - with Jones 10-0 without Jones/with Ethier 0-2
What say you now?

Ruth just told me that having Hu in the lineup today caused her souffle to fall which will ruin our supper! Dang you Hu!
Hu’s on Short
No, HU’S ON FIRST! WHAT’S ON SECOND? I dunno’s on third….

Thanks Lawdog,
I plan to make it even better soon. I have a lot of surprises in store.
