11-30-07 - These are the Dog Days

aagr079_b.jpgNot many rumors, other than the ones already out there.  All is quiet, except for the screaming rumors, which are probably 93.6% wrong!  So, let’s start some rumors of our own…   Actually, I am pretty certain that Juan Pierre will be traded and I really don’t think the Dodgers will have to eat any salary.  Lots of teams need (1) a speedy leadoff hitter; (2) a CF; and/or (3) both.  I still like Mike Cameron in CF, but Rowand would be an expensive upgrade.   I think the Dodgers like Rowand’s character, so we’ll see.  The winter meetings should yield a few deals - the Rays have already been busy!

    What did the Rays do?

Lots of rumors about Pierre. Some of the things we Dodger fans are saying crack me up. I keep hearing what a crap player he is, but then I hear people say “don’t trade him to the Padres”. Why not? If he is a waste of roster space, why not send him to a division rival?

Rumor has it, that the Giants are going to trade Zito straight up for Pierre.

No way I’d make that trade!

    Badger,

Pierre would be fine, great even, if we didn’t have Furcal. Furcal will be great at the top of the lineup without Pierre. I just don’t want both. Trade one. I don’t care which one.

    Yeah, maybe.

To tell you the truth, I wasn’t all that excited about the Pierre signing, but I did think he made us better. Not a lot better but better. I was looking forward to that one two punch. I believed the two complimented each other very well. I think we overpaid him, but then I think we overpay everybody.

With runners on, Pierre hit .301 last year. That’s pretty good. And with Furcal on, he probably would have seen a lot of fastballs. I figured both of those guys would score 100+ runs, and that makes us better. Didn’t happen, now Pierre is being blamed for all kinds of Dodger problems and frankly I don’t believe he has it coming. All he did was show up everyday and hustle his ass off. We need more of those, not less.

So if you must trade someone, I trade Pierre. Just make sure you get equal value in return.

Frankly with Hu ready to go, trade Furcal too. I really don’t care. Whatever makes the team better.
