The Junkyard Dogs are Back!

Last year, when the Dodgers got off to a fast start, it wasn’t like they had a big star, it was just a team effort by a bunch of junkyard dogs.  Last year the junkyard dogs were Luis Cruz, Juan Rivera, Bobby Abreu, Elian Herrera, Adam Kennedy, Mark Ellis, James Loney,  AJ Ellis and others.  Before I continue, being a “junkyard dog” is a compliment – probably the greatest form of flattery I could bestow upon someone.  When you are a junkyard dog, you make up for lack of talent with girt, determination and desire – I call it “junkyard dogism.”

The Dodgers aren’t hitting the ball particularity well right now, but they are a bunch of junkyard dogs.  Puig and Crawford are hurting, Ramirez and Kemp are out, but the Junkyard Dogs just keep winning.   After looking like the bad news bears in the first inning, the Dodgers tightened it up and got down to junkyard dogism.  After looking like a Home-Run Derby Pitcher at the start of the game Zach Greinke quit throwing the smoke and just threw strikes.  He adjusted to the small strike zone of the home plate umpire while Adam Wainwright did not.  Pure junkyard dogism!

Paco finished them off like a junkyard dog should.  What a run this is!  I remember 1963, 1966, 1981, 1988 and all the good times as a Dodger fan, but as a Dodger fan, I have never been on such a long high.  This is better than dope.

Dodger Notes:

  • If you watched Hanley’s fall on Sunday, you had to see that he was nearly stopped when he hit the rail and fell – he was not running at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred, so all he was doing was catching his body weight, which is why I didn’t feel the injury was serious.  With Kemp’s it was obvious that he hyper-extended the ankle, but I saw no evidence that would lead me to believe his should was dislocated.  It turns out that is what probably happened.
  • If you wonder why MRI’s aren’t done right away after an injury, the main reason is that the dye can irritate a joint that (if not damaged) could result in additional time to heal.  It’s generally best to wait a few days, unless it is obviously damaged severely anyway!
  • Will Dee Gordon get a start?  Maybe!!!
  • I predict that Clayton will pitch the game of his life tonight!

  1. Davey Lopes says:

MRIs can be done with or without contrast, choosing to do one with contrast usually indicates that the doctor is concerned about soft-tissue damage. Knowing that, does make me a little more concerned about how severe the injury may or may not be. You’ve got to read between the lines when it comes to why some types of medical procedures are selected and others are not.

  2. Idaho al says:

You are right Mark, they are fun to watch. The pitching has just been outstanding. If they can get six innings out of the starter, the bull pen just shuts the door. Enjoy it while it last. This cannot continue. If we can get everybody healthy by September 1, this could be a great time to be a dodger fan. The owners are trying to win now and at the same time, build up the farm system. I think they are doing a great job.

  3. Bluenose Dodger says:

The hero of last night’s game in my opinion was Nick Punto with the bullet to the plate from a position we could never guess he would have been in and starting an almost impossible DP to help Paco out. Plus a great backhand stab and a bullet to first base.

  4. Davey Lopes says:

    Bluenose,

Yeah I never understood why so many in here wanted to Punt Punto earlier this season. He is a very solid ballplayer with great major league experience. He really was one of the defensive key contributors last night. He is just the type of player you want on your bench for a run for the pennant.

Puig is still the straw that stirs the drink however.

    • Badger says:

I don’t think anyone wanted to “punt” Punto as you suggest. We just didn’t want him asked to do something he is not equipped to do – start. He is a back- up and as a back-up he should NOT be playing every day. Big difference.

  5. Badger says:

These ” dogs” are playing behind some outstanding pitching.

I see roid did a little reading up before posting. That’s a good thing.

  6. Quasimodo says:

I already feel bad for the pitcher who’s next to have an off outing. I’m sure all of them individually will approach the mound hoping they have their great stuff and that their great stuff is good enough. None of them has let us down – even after that appearance when it comes. 32 of 39 is giving more than any fan has the right to expect. Pocket A’s don’t always hold but got us holding the big stack and the other players have good reason to fear. At other sites there’s an assortment of several teams fans posting how much fun it is to watch Dodgers. Guess these owners did something right!

  7. Bobby says:

Yesterday early on (the part of the game I did watch), I was getting frustrated with Greinke because he was in and out of jams, and not doing what a co-ace or a #2 would do in a big game vs a big game pitcher.

However, looks like he really settled down and outdueled a tough pitcher on the road in a playoff type game. Big props to Greinke for a playoff type win. Gave me a lot more confidence in him for a playoff game 2.

Now can Koufax Part 2 dominate today??

  8. Brooklyn Dodger says:

Bluenose, I agree that Punto came up big on that play to the plate. But to me, he only gets part of the credit. He doesn’t make that play unless Puig gets the ball to him accurately from deep in right field, and kudos also to A.J. Ellis who made a nice tag on that play. That’s teamwork.

I also don’t think anyone wanted to “Punt” Punto. He is what he is, a solid, professional utility player, who if used correctly will produce both in the field and at the plate. And as I noted earlier, it’s why I preferred to see him in the game instead of Gordon, even though I am a Gordon supporter.

Call it “junkyard dogism”, call it what you want. The Dodgers are winning because they’re getting good pitching, starters and bullpen alike, and because they’re playing fundamentally sound baseball, including a lot better defense than we saw earlier in the year. What still concerns me is the up and down offense, and the uncertain health of this team. Sooner or later that stuff catches up with you.

I believe that Brian Wilson will be pitching at Rancho tomorrow. Barring a setback, we’ll probably be seeing him with the Dodgers in a couple of weeks.

Anybody know the status of Jose Dominguez. Guessing he’s still on the DL. I wonder what plans the Dodgers have for him the remainder of this season.

  9. Bobbie17 says:

    Paco. Paco. Paco.

  10. Quasimodo says:

On Punto, Steve Lyons gave great insight on what we have in Punto saying Punto isn’t equipped with the tools the elite players have and has to work hard at his job. Thank you, Nick Punto! BTW….Punto reads here.

  11. Roger Dodger says:

On Punto, it was not getting rid of him, it was getting upgrades with some of those extra guys, who in April — all looked alike and play alike and were alike . . . no basher among them. As as time when on, some small changes came along.

    But these last games: 3-2, 1-0, 3-0, 6-4, 3-2, 1-0, 2-1, 10-9, 3-2, etc.

Many of them played back in April or May — would have been loses. What a turn around now. The Cardinals are scratching their head now on why THEY did not take than game last night.

  12. Badger says:

Punto is replacing a guy who was hitting .360 with an OPS over 1.000. Punto is what he is – a .250 hitter with an OPS around .625. That is a remarkable drop off in offensive production.

This team is winning with pitching. Like was just mentioned, this streak will likely end when the pitching gives up more than 3 runs.

  13. Badger says:

With the 23rd pick in the 2014 MLB draft, the Los Angeles Dodgers pick…..

as of right now, the midgets have a protected pick at #7. With any luck, they will pick higher.

And some people thought the Dodgers were a last place team. Pity the fools!

Wonder how Kemp is feeling these days. Stupid? Yeah. But can he run yet?

Speaking of running, one of my high school coaches favorite drills was – a runner on first base being chased by a runner from home. The idea was to get home before the guy from home got to third. We ran those nearly every day instead of straight sprints…. one after another for several minutes. Three bases is a long way time after time after time. I wonder how much full out sprinting these ML guys actually do.

  14. Davey Lopes says:

Miserable people enjoy spreading misery, it’s a shame but it is a fact. Thus the old adage, “misery loves company”.

  15. Bobby says:

    Ted Lilly to the Giants.

Look forward to him and Kersh battling in a 0-0 game in the 7th sometime in late September

  16. Badger says:

If Lilly is in a 0 – 0 game in the 7th he is on in relief of likely Bumgarner. And yeah, he’s the guy I want in there at that time.

No roid, you are alone in your misery. If this place makes you so angry, why keep coming back?

  17. DRomo says:

    I agree with Bobby,

Lilly will no hit us September 13 at the stadium. hahaha

  18. Davey Lopes says:

The only angry one is you, your misery is pretty obvious, even to you. You just can’t help yourself. Like I said your serious posts are actually your funniest posts. You sure like to stir it up, don’t you? Pathetic, predictable and sad come to mind when I think of your lonely and isolated life.

  19. Leroy says:

Haha, Mark. I love it when the junkyard dogs are in action. Ruff! Ruff!

  20. Badger says:

Same lineup for two straight days? That’s strange. Doesn’t somebody need a rest after playing 1 in a row?

  21. Quasimodo says:

Wonder what the odds are on tonight’s Dodgers @ Cardinals? There’s two sides of that coin that say only a fool would place a bet either way – I think I’m talking myself into perhaps placing one. I mean a run of this nature has the odds against the dodgers has its played longer than imaginable. But the same was also against Secretariat winning the Triple Crown. But we all knew that horse was going to. That’s about the best comparison I’m able to come up with.

  22. Quasimodo says:

Not at all, Dodgers are favored. But the man gets paid.

  23. Michael says:

Guilty as charged. I was the punt Punto culprit and of course he had a career[as a dodger]night; sure hope I don’t win the Powerball tomorrow.

Like to see us score some runs for the kid tonight.

Who’s the hero tonight/ That Ethier ,Marks ex-whipping boy, is due

    Dee?

    Just win, baby

  24. Brooklyn Dodger says:

If Ethier is going to be the hero tonight it’s going to be later. I don’t mind him having the green light on a 3-0 pitch, but if he’s going to have it he needs to zero in on a fastball down the middle and lay off anything else. Instead he swings at a low fastball that was probably ball four.

Great play by Kershaw. Can’t believe how quickly he reacted and completed the DP at first base.

  25. Quasimodo says:

    True that, Brook.

  26. the truth hurts says:

Looks like our lineup has a bad case of the Kershaw-shtarts again.

    • Badger says:

Yep. What would his record be if he got the support Wainwright gets? (5 per game)

So……. how long are Ramirez and Kemp going to sitting there watching?

  27. Michael says:

I bet Mark even in his debilitating condition could beat AGon in a race, does he wear lead boots?

  28. Quasimodo says:

Geez this dp nonsense needs less revisiting.

  29. the truth hurts says:

That is a good question Badger. Hanley will probably go on the DL tomorrow and Kemp will have a set back.

The wild horse has surely been tamed behind the turtle.

  30. Jason says:

So Crawford hits a line drive that stays fair, rolls past Holliday, bounces off of two walls and he only gets a double???????

A double??????? Where is the speed?

And then fast forward to the 1 out bases-loaded DP – they are killing me tonight! The Ace is on the mound! Give him some dang run support!

  31. Brooklyn Dodger says:

Why was Punto bunting? The way this team is hitting, the last thing they should be doing is giving up outs. Also, even if Punto hit a ground ball to the right side he would move the runner to third. And finally, just try to get a base hit, and if that doesn’t work the runner is still in scoring position. I just don’t get it.

  32. Roger Dodger says:

Well, Kershaw is getting Kershaw-ed again. Or my definition: he is pitching fine, quality start ——- but being out-pitched by the other guy.

I am posting this so a Dodger hitter will make me out wrong, and put the guys ahead.

But some Dodgers are going to have to stop hitting into so many D-Ps.

  33. Badger says:

Why not let Kershaw hit for himself? He’s only thrown 90 and can handle the bat.

Puig behind AGon makes no sense.

  34. Bobby says:

Despite the fact that we’re hot as of late, I still do not think AGone is a #3 hitter.

Hanley should be 3, Agone 4, and Kemp when he returns 5

  35. Roger Dodger says:

For several weeks now (I pointed out the scores earlier today) winning games by just a bit. Now — tonight, the old April-May look-a-likes are having trouble of key hits.

Do these guy take batting practice? So far, hitting into 4 double plays!!!!!

Puig has not hit many balls hard and deep of late. Needs to happen with Kemp and Hanley both out.

  36. Roger Dodger says:

Last 10 games Adrian G. is hitting .243 with ZERO HRs and 3 RBIs. We need more from him — now.

Where is Dee? Need him in there, somewhere . . .

  37. Badger says:

Put all the rabbits, and I use that term loosely, in front of Gonzalez.

    Top of 8 went quickly.

  38. Rob says:

    Why did Donnie pull Howell?

  39. Brooklyn Dodger says:

OK, so they said Beltran is a better hitter lefthanded. Don’t the Dodgers know that? Why not leave Howell in and force Beltran to hit from the right side?

  40. Roger Dodger says:

9th inning my favorite guys are up: Ellis, Uribe, & Punto, Schu, and if it continues, Crawford, pitcher’s slot.

    I am now officially worried.

I think with Kemp and Hanley out, and Gonzalez in a funk with not much bat speed and Puig is now human at the plate and Ethier is lost again — the guys need the pitching staff to go back to shutouts for those 1 to zip wins.

  41. Rob says:

I agree Brooklyn, Donnie is getting his bad calls back. We do need a third lefty out of the pen. Maybe capuano is that guy.

  42. Rob says:

Matheny just showed Donnie how to manage a game.

  43. Quasimodo says:

And I was trying unsuccessfully to like League. So much for trying.

  44. Brooklyn Dodger says:

In this case we didn’t so much need a third lefty, as we just needed to leave in the game the lefty who was already in the game.

  45. Quasimodo says:

Glad I didn’t head across the street to the sports bar looking to get a bet booked.

  46. Roger Dodger says:

These Junkyard Dogs are gone. Someone threw in Tainted meat.

Looked lost with all those DPs.

Where is Puig in all of this? His bat is not what it was. He is just not driving the ball like he did — is Big Mac messing with his natural born swing.

Mark, how does the Torch Red and red seats seem to you, enough drama or toooo much?

  47. Quasimodo says:

Couldn’t of asked for a much better run. Lets hope the loss streak has a very short life. Cheers for the run!

  48. jerry says:

i think puig should be hitting in front of gonz // puig can not run with gonz in front of him..every time we stop gonz at third he stays there…i would send him no matter what..then have to make a good throw..because we never score either way,i would of pulled league after the walk… you could tell he didnt have it..

  49. Jason says:

Opposing teams these days must love facing Kershaw. 99.9% of the time they win.

  50. Badger says:

    Uruntellimaker – 3 for 13. with 10 LOB. That won’t reach.

    League. Lose him.
