Marcus Thames is a really nice guy who can hit a home-run (or strikeout) and is a below average fielder (I am being very kind). Xavier Paul deserves to be on the team, but Don Mattingly needs to just forget this Paul – Gwynn – Thames Triad in Left Field and commit to playing Tony Gwynn, Jr. there for the next 46 games. I’d like to see what he brings on a daily basis as the Dodgers #2 hitter and defensive monster in LF. By 50 games we should have a good idea, and I have a gut feeling it just might be good. If Donnie wants Thames’ bat in the lineup, platoon him with Loney. Yeah, I know it weakens the Dodgers’ defense, but so does Thames in LF.
Look, this team is going to rise and fall on whether Raffy is healthy and whether Kemp, Loney, Ethier, Blake and Uribe can drive in runs. I’d like to see the lineup I have posted below for a while, which puts Gwynn’s speed right out there to rattle other pitchers (if he can just get on base). He deserves that chance. The Dodgers need a number two hitter
… and it ain’t Casey Blake!
- Furcal SS
- Gwynn LF
- Kemp CF (I like Kemp better in the #3 hole – speed in the first inning)
- Ethier RF
- Blake 3B
- Loney 1B
- Uribe 2B
- Barajas C
With the power in that lineup, Gwynn is a luxury the Dodgers can afford in LF. Think about it Donnie. It makes a lot of sense!
