Padilla May Be Shot!

Padilla May Be Shot!

No – not with a gun, although he has been known to shoot himself in the foot on occasion. His arm could be shot – well, I am using poetic license because “shot” when referring to Vicente Padilla has more meaning than saying “he has a problem with his arm.”  I like shot better and… well, you get my drift!  Anyway, according to Dylan Hernandez of The LA Times, Padilla is experiencing the same kind of pain in his right elbow that shut him down for two months last year.

This cannot be good.

“Wait”, you say.  “That’s negative.   Think positive!”

Ummm… OK, I’m positive this is not good!

First we had a reliever with a “live” arm and a “dead” head.  Now, Padilla may be “shot.”

Will the real Ramon Troncoso please stand up.  Push the panic button (just kidding).  This is evidence that you can NEVER have enough pitching.

I went on record last year that I thought Don Mattingly would be a bad hire and then was really disappointed when he was hired.  Well, it’s looking more and more like I was wrong and that Don Mattingly may be just what the Doctor ordered.  I thought he was a bad hire because I assumed that he would be a “Torre Clone.”  Boy was I wrong!  Right out of the chute, Donnie Ballgame has managed to do all this:

  • Named Clayton Kershaw Opening Day Starter;
  • Said that it was likely Thames and Gibbons would platoon in LF;
  • Said that Barajas and Navarro would like platoon;
  • Said the Dodgers coaching staff could have handled the Kemp situation better;
  • Anointed Andre Ethier Team Leader, along with Matt Kemp;
  • Proclaimed that Ethier and Kemp would hit #3 and #4 in the lineup:
  • Said that the baserunning was lousy last year; and
  • Said that he would not overuse the bullpen.

He has distanced himself from his mentor, Joe Torre and is putting his imprimatur on this team.  Some may think he should have waited to make the announcement about Kershaw, Kemp and Ethier, but I have no problem with that because they are young players who need to get certain ideas reinforced in their heads and let them GROW into those positions.
