Players of the Day – Nick Akins and Brian Cavazos-Galvez, OF
After a disappointing June, BCG has hit safely in all 24 July games, an ongoing record hitting streak that has ignited the Loons’ offense. He’s also hit 8 home runs this month, after hitting just 3 in April thru June. That, combined with his 30 stolen bases, is a lot to be excited about. Now, the bad news. He’s walked 1 time this month, and only 10 times in 87 games this season. That’s the one part of Brian’s game that will ultimately keep him from excelling, so it’s the most important aspect of his offensive package and needs to be refined.
Nick Akins accomplished the rare feat of coming a single short of the cycle. That gives him 5 home runs in 10 Pioneer League games in 11 in 30 overall. For you fans of the clutch stats, he’s hitting .294 with the bases empty, .350 with runners on and .417 with RISP. Granted, the sample size is tiny, but still impressive. He’s destroying rookie ball pitching for the second year in a row, which begs the question: why is he still there?

BCG is TOP hitter of July for sure…if Dodgers could promote Songco,Smith or BCG to A+ then Akins could get promoted..
Hard to figure why these simple tasks are difficult.
Akins needs a taste of A ball.
BCG at 23 needs to move up. He competed 4 years in college, and proved he could hit Division I pitching, and is still at low A?
Maybe it’s just a question of not having enough spots to move all of these guys to where they need to be.
It seems it is difficult to move guys up as spots are limited. One of the things that often puzzles me is why the AAA club in Albuquerque has so many career minor leaguers playing and why we continue to pick up old guys to fill out that roster.
AAA seems to be a deadend street for our system, not so mush a jumping off spot to the big team. It ssems as many guys come up from AA as AAA. As long as the AAA team keeps spots for old guys, the chances of promotion seem to be restricted in the rest of the system.
GO DODGERS!!
Here’s a big story , the Dodgers signed Juan Castro. NOT
I have often wondered the same thing H. Every year we have 30 year old journeymen at that level, and they are never used. Why not send Sands there and move the other guys up a level?
I do not know — but if the Dodgers do not have capable, almost ready, blue chip players for AAA, Ned does what he loves at this point — get a bunch of never really made it life-time minor leaguers —- who could be called up if needed.
Guys look flat so far tonight. Or, Garland, who Joe does not trust — is just maybe a solid pitcher now.
Broxton comes back from 3-0 to strike out Matt Stairs. There goes that bugaboo. Stairs is one of the best fastball hitters I’ve ever seen, but I’m guessing at 41 he may no longer be able to catch up to the heater like he used to. He might be the Padres version of Garret Anderson.
Want a reason why it’s nice to have a deep back end of the bullpen? Ethier’s pinch hit. The decision to send Ethier up to hit for Billingsley was probably based on the fact that Torre had Kuo, Jansen and Broxton behind him. He may have also felt that Billingsley had gone far enough. But it had to be comforting to know who he had behind him.
Nice to see Ethier stay within himself, and just try to hit the ball up the middle. That’s exactly what he needs to do to put an end to his slump.
I was ready to jump out of my seat in the 6th inning, when the Dodgers demonstrated one of the reasons why they haven’t been hitting. Lack of discipline at the plate. Furcal, Paul and Kemp all swung at ball four with two runners aboard.
1 down, 6 to go.
Badger,
Throw in the three game series against the Giants, and you might say 1 down, 9 to go.
Yep, you are absolutely right Brooklyn. Then, after a three game “break” against Washington, we go to Philly and Atlanta for 7.
This is a brutal part of the schedule. The last time I said that, I believe we ended up 6 games out. The team seems to be playing better, but this is such a streaky bunch.
