Just Rants & Raves
  • Doug Mientkiewicz will be one of our first call-up on September 1st.  We can use his LH bat as a pinch hitter.  Tony Abreu’s bat will be nice too.
  • With the Rockies 4th straight loss, the Dodgers are now 5.0 games in the driver’s seat!

We will have a LH pinch hitter next week.

We will have a LH pinch hitter next week.

  • Cliff Lee Yesterday - 5 IP/10 Hits/6 R – See that guy isn’t any good!  Haeger pitched better than that (almost).
  • Here’s a quick scouting report on Charlie Haeger:  “Don’t swing at the first 2 or 3 pitches.”  If hitters don’t swing at Haeger’s first two pitches or three, the odds are at least two and maybe three, may be balls, then he has to take a little off and get it over the plate.  It will be interesting to see how he fares now that he’s been scouted 3 times.  He’ll have to adjust.   The league is going to make him throw strikes.
  • Gameday had C-Bill at 95 in the 5th inning, leading me to believe it’s still his head, not his arm.  Actually, if you watch, you will see that he is not hitting his spots.  The catcher has to move his glove a long way on most pitches.  His control is worse than Kershaw’s right now.
  • Juan Pierre’s return to the lineup results in a win…. hummmmm…..
  • Loney, Martin, Manny, Furcal, Preston Mattingley – all reasons that Don Mattingly may not be what the Dodgers need as a hitting instructor.
  • Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp both rave a shot at 100 RBI.
  • I predict that the Dodgers will have 4 hitters who hit 20+ HR, meaning Manny has to get hot!
  • Another prediction:  James Loney will be “white hot” in September, and just miss getting 100 RBI’s.
  • The Giants are now #2 in baseball in team ERA – the Dodgers are alone at #1!
  • Clayton Kershaw faces Bronson Arroyo today in Cincinnati.  Arroyo has been hot of late, allowing only 11 ER in his last 6 starts (44.1 IP).

Players of the day – Great Lakes’ pitching staff

It’s the third straight 3-hit shutout for Loons’ pitchers and they’ve extended their scoreless innings streak to 31. Eovaldi lowered his ERA to 3.38 and Martin raised his team-leading strikeout total to 114, which is good for 8th in the league. And of course there was JonMichael Redding’s 6 innings of one hit ball yesterday, preceded by Aaron Miller’s brilliant no-hit bid on Thursday. Great Lakes also clinched a playoff birth with their win, the first in their young history. With their recent dominance on the mound and very potent offense, the Loons look to be the favorites in their effort to take the Midwest league title.

If Martin finishes strong, he can at least get close to his career numbers. His OBP this is actually higher than his career average. And, if Loney finishes “white hot”, Manny gets his 20, 4 Dodgers hit 20, Ethier and Kemp both get 100, the Dodgers will likely finish at the top of the league in hitting stats.

So, if what you predict actually happens Mark, why would Mattingly lose his job? Right now we are 3rd in all of baseball in avg. and if we had some HR hitters, and did just a bit better WRISP, we wouldn’t be 9th in runs scored. This is a good hitting Dodger club. I am fine with what Mattingly has done with them. This team will win if it hits. I suspect September will be a good month for the Dodgers hitters.

If Haeger keeps that floater down, he can do just fine. If the book is to take a pitch, throw an 80 mph strike one fastball at the knees with it. He got into trouble with pitches at the belt. I wonder if left in, he would have figured it out and finished ok.

I believe Mintcaveitch and Abreu will be better hitters off the bench than Loretta and Ausmus.

Juan is hitting again. He had been cool mid summer, (.264 June, .268 July) but, .380 in August. Man, that sure helps. Give him at bats until he cools off again.

The gints pitch well, that is true, but they are 28th in runs scored.

Yep, we are in the drivers seat. Keep hitting Dogs.

  2. A Shot of Haeger says:

I read on Peter Gammons blog yesterday the Dee Gordon was a part of the very competitive offer we made for Cliff Lee. I don’t know what the other players were… but if we make a competitive offer and the Indians took the less competitive offer…is that Ned’s fault? I also read the Indians were looking for major league ready or close to ready talent….. and we don’t have that in AA and AAA… so unless we were planning on trading multiple players off our major league roster…. I just don’t see how we could match up with the Indians very well.

I don’t know how many of you have an IPhone… but I was away yesterday doing my fantasy football draft and missed the game. The MLB 2009 application for the IPhone is awesome. You get live radio from every team in the league… selected games…live streaming video( blackout rules apply).. but they also put together a condensed game…the last pitch in every at bat for every player… so I basically watched the highlights in 15 minutes… it was awesome!!!

Hope the Dodgers get the “W” today

  3. Mark Timmons says:

Look at the Angels lineup. Their first 7 all hit over .300. Loney, Furcal and Martin have all showed they are capable of that too. I think our lineup is the equal of theirs…

  4. Ken says:

The thing about being a new Ace is that you will get attacked more. When an Ace becomes a Test Pilot he increases his chance of crashing. Yesterday was not a Haeger Day.

When I watch Kershaw his plant leg seems to react slightly differently when he follows through versus when he spins toward 3rd base. I suspect Bills broken plant leg is not completely healed because when he is tired he absolutely does not follow through and spins on his plant leg, thus losing all control.

Hello Doug goodbye Repko? Big decision day tommorrow by Ned.

The minors league teams play until 9/7. Maybe the Dodgers call up some pitchers and Eyechart, on 9/1 and a second group on 9/8??

    Go gints (today only)

  5. Ken says:

How about a 10 second team meeting in the middle of the game where the coaches Man Up and tell all of the position players that the next batter that pulls an outside pinch will be benched

Another Moronic Skeet Shooting Day PULL

  6. Badger says:

Kershaw, 90 to get through 6. That is a step in the right direction.

Top of the order going down like old men at midnight – softly, quietly, no fuss just show me my pillow.

  7. Buddy says:

ESPN is reporting the Dodgers just acquired Ronnie Belliard from the Nats for two minor leaguers.

  8. Badger says:

Ronnie Belliard? What the heck for? Abreu is a better hitter than Belliard is.

I hope those two minor leaguers are not real prospects.

    • Kay in L.A. says:

Badger, I am going to stop talking about Cavazos-Galvez, sure hope it’s not him…. please…..

  9. Ken says:

More On Ned – Load up on the old folks and get rid of 2 young players. Might as well give the Nats Repko becasue he is the logical one to dump to make a roster spot. Now who gets dropped to activate Eyechart? Castillo or Heager?

  10. Kay in L.A. says:

Ken Levine named one the minor leaguers, said the other is TBA later.

Dodger pitching did good today, some hitting also but not into double plays please.

  11. Buddy says:

Dodger pitching performed well; they can’t perform “good.”

One of the minor leaguers sent to Washington is pitcher Luis Garcia, a low level prospect. Belliard will be available tomorrow. He’s been hitting very well the past month and could be a valuable pinch hitter.

  12. Ken says:

Luis Garcia is a Low level prospect With a Rocket – Mid Season Prospect Ranking #22 on one report.

Stop the Trades – The Dodger minor league system has a few good prospects and then no depth just a bunch of under performing players.

  13. Ken says:

It’s kind of tough to put any of them in a little grove. We are trying to avoid Belliard sitting too long on the bench. Belliard has to be a good hitter off the bench for us, and I think if he sits too long, that big pinch-hit isn’t going to come. He needs to have some at-bats to draw from when he steps [to] the plate in a pinch-hit situation.”
