TOM O’SHEAS’ MINOR LEAGUE REPORT    7-11-09

Breaking News:  KUO pitches another “quality” inning of relief for the Isotopes.  And HU builds his average to ..263 with a two hit game.

THE OGDEN RAPTORS       ROOKIE       kuo

Raptors beat Billings 10-4.

MAGILL (W, 1-1, 6.10), started and got the win despite being mediocre–giving up  4 earned runs in 5.2 innings.  SUITER (H, 2, 4.50), and FERRERAS (1.80) pitched 1 hit shutout ball the rest of the way for the Raptors.

ERICKSON (.340), JACOBS (.304), and CAVAZOS-GALVEZ (.291), went yard.  SONGCO (.377), hit his first triple.  CAVAZOS-GALVEZ, YNOA (.160), and GUERRERO (.269) added 2-baggers for the Raptors.

CAVAZOS-GALVEZ, SONGCO, and GUERRERO all had 2 hit games as well.

THE ALBUQUERQUE ISOTOPES           AAA

The Isotopes beat Memphis 7-2.

STULTS (W, 1-1, 5.00), started and went 6 quality innings giving up just 2 earned runs on 5 hits, 2 BBs and fanned 8.  KUO (H, 1, 4.50), pitched a shutout inning–good news for the now “closer-less” Dogs.  CHOI (H, 5, 2.28), and STRICKLAND (3.34), did the same.

HU (.263), clubbed his first triple while ABREU (.241), CLOSSER (.338), and GONZALEZ (.209),  all whacked doubles.

HU, HOFFMAN (.300), and CLOSSER had 2 hit games.

THE CHATANOOGA LOOKOUTS       AA

Lookouts beat Huntsville 7-3.

BASTARDO (W, 2-1, 4.05) started and pitched 7 quality innings giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits, 2 BBs and 5 Ks.  CORCORAN (5.80), couldn’t get anybody out.  But ADKINS (5.09), SARTOR (3.23), and GARATE (2.10), followed and pitched lights out shutout ball the rest of the way.

GODWIN (.239), whacked a triple.  BELL (.278) smacked 2 doubles.  GODWIN, and NIVAR (.400), added 2-baggers of their own.

GODWIN had a 3 hit game.  NIVAR, BELL, and MAY (.316), had 2 hits each.

THE INLAND EMPIRE 66ERS     A     ADVANCED

Lancaster beats 66ers with 3 run walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth, 11-8.

The 66er pitching was terrible tonight.  Only KREBS (2.89) pitched well, going 2 innings of 1 hit shut out relief.  Everyone else was treated rudely by Lancaster and were mercilessly pounded like second rate batting practice pitchers..

VAN SLYKE (.311), hit his 13th home run of the season as well as his 4th triple.  CASERES (.295), hit 2 doubles, ORTIZ (.244), and ROBINSON (.298), each added a 2-bagger of their own in the futile attempt of the 66ers to run with the superior Lancaster team.

ROBINSON was 3-5.  HERRERA (.326), VAN SLYKE, and CASERES, managed to chalk up 2 hit games as well.

THE GREAT LAKES LOONS     A

Kane County beats our Loons 6-4.

The pitching was mediocre.  The starter and loser, WALTER (L, 5-3, 3.43), gave up 6 earned runs in 4 innings.  AGUASVIVA (0.34), SMITH (3.22), and PRATT (5.13) managed to keep Kane County from scoring any more runs, but pitched  pretty much “ugly” the rest of the way.

RUSSELL (.284) whacked a triple.  HATCH (.271), and BUSS (.259), both added doubles.

BUSS and HATCH had 2 hit games for the Loons.

THE OGDEN RAPTORS    ROOKIE

Great Falls beats Raptors 6-4.

Staked to a 4-3 lead going into the 9th, the Raptors closer, PAXSON (BS, 1, L, 1-1, 4.32),  was blown up for 3 runs, all earned, on 3 hits and a walk to beat the Raptors last night.

GUERRERO (.254),  and CAVAZOS-GALVEZ (.284), blasted homers.  YNOA (.146), and Guerrero added 2 baggers.

CAVAZOS-GALVEZ and GUERRERO had 2 hit games for the Raptors.

THE ALBUQUERQUE ISOTOPES     AAA

Memphis beats the Isotopes 3-0.

Charlie Haeger (L, 8-6, 3.740, twirled a 7 inning “quality start” allowing just 4 hits and 4 BBs with 7 Ks over that period. SCLICHTING (1.42) finished up with 1 inning of shutout, no hit ball.

FREE HAEGER!  Bring him up for a cup of coffee and see if he can pitch quality starts at the big league level. He’s done proven himself at the farm!

JONES (.281) and HU  (.261), each hit their 13th double.

THE CHATTANOOGA LOOKOUTS   AA

Huntsville squeaks by the Lookouts 4-3.

The pitching was mediocre enough to ignore yesterday as Lookout hurlers collectively gave up 13 hits and 4 runs over the course of the game.  Only BATISTA’S (2.25), 2 inning effort in which he pitched 1 hit, shut out ball with 2 Ks deserves mentioning.  The rest of the pitching was very forgettable.

PEREZ (.279) smacked his 6th round tripper.  MITCHELL (.210), hit his 2nd triple; and PEREZ added his 13th double.

PEREZ, went 3-4.  TOMLIN (.320), and MITCHELL had 2 hit games.

THE INLAND EMPIRE 66ERS     A    ADVANCED

Lancaster stomped the 66ers 4-0.

ALVAREZ (5.08), got the 66ers off to a good start pitching 5 innings of shut out ball–giving up just 2 hits and 2 walks while fanning 6.  After that it was all down hill until BRANNON (3.65), mopped up the last 1.2 innings by pitching 1 hit shut out ball giving up 0 walks and fanning 4.

HERRERA (.325) and MATTINGLY (.255) each whacked a double.  GARABEDIAN (.265) went 2-4.

Except for their hitting and pitching, the 66ers looked good.

THE GREAT LAKES LOONS    A

The Loons edge Peoria 7-6.

The Loons held on to beat Peoria last night thanks to some fine relief pitching from GARCIA (H, 3, 2.77) and St. Clair (S, 4, 3.24) who, between them, pitched 4 innings of shut out ball.

RUSSELL (.283), hit his 21st home run.  SILVERIO (.272) added his 7th round tripper.  GORDON (.301), slugged his 9th triple, and HATCH (.266), added his 21st double.  Buss also whacked a double to round out the extra base hitting for the Loonies.

RUSSELL and SILVERIO had 2 hit games.
