May 15, 2009 – Tony Jackson Is Back!

tony-bowa

I’m baaaaaa-aaaaaaack.

And unlike the last Dodgers-related person who famously uttered those two words, I don’t plan on being suspended for 50 games. Yes, it’s true, I have joined LADodgertalk.com, and I’m in it full-bore. Many of you are familiar with me from my work as the Dodgers beat writer for the Daily News and on the Daily News Dodgers blog.

First of all, let me say this: I never got the chance to say goodbye to my loyal readers after I was unceremoniously dumped by the increasingly cost-conscious Daily News on April 30. But I did read almost every comment that was posted, and the outpouring of support is something I will never forget. I knew that blog had a loyal following, but I never dreamed that so many people would be so supportive of me, and I want all of you to know how deeply I appreciated all the kinds words that were passed on to me through direct emails and through comments posted on not only that blog but several others around town.

In short, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all of you.

Let me also say this: that support that I have received from those readers was a big reason for my decision to take on this new challenge. I have long dreamed of being able to follow the Dodgers on a daily basis as strictly a blogger, without the burden of having to also write two or three stories a day for a printed newspaper. Thanks to Mark and Miguel, I am now going to have the chance to live that dream, and I hope to make this THE definitive Dodgers blog that fans will come to first.

Finally, let me tell you a little bit about my vision for this blog. My plan is to post 20 to 30 items a day. Some of those posts will be breaking news. Some will be daily updates. Some will be opinion. Some will be observances, casual and otherwise. Some will be anecdotal. Some will be descriptive scene-setting. Some will be more in-depth. Eventually, there probably will be more photos than you saw on my previous blog, and possibly some audio and video.

Basically, I want to take you, the reader, along with me through the course of each day at the ballpark, letting you see what I see, letting you hear what I hear.

It’s going to be a little while before this gets going full steam. My posts are going to be sporadic over these next few weeks, as I’m heading to Colorado next week to attend my daughter’s high-school graduation, then home to Arkansas for a few days. After that, I want to come back to my house in Phoenix and just chill for a couple of weeks before I return to Los Angeles and get back into the daily beat coverage, hopefully around the middle of June.

The most important part of this blog, like any blog, will be you. Check in often. Post your comments often. I need you. So many of you were there for me for the past few years with that other blog, and I’m hoping you will all make this transition with me, and bring a few of your friends along with you when you do.

I’m excited for this new chapter. Let’s make this a great blog, together.

I have season tickets right on the rail above the third base side of the press box and I would always glance in the press box to see if my favorite Dodger reporter was sitting in his spot in the second row. Its wonderful to know you will still be there providing insights and information to the fans. Its great to have you back

  2. xcapoutx says:

So glad to have you back. I live out in Nashville now, and without your blog i was dying for news throughout the day. The other Dodger blogs really lack consistent updating throughout the day. Congratulations for your new gig.

  3. Evan says:

Tony welcome back. It is great to see you are doing well. I will check in as much as I can.

    Thanks Evan.

  4. Jeremy D says:

    Hi Tony,
I added LA Dodger Talk to my Google Reader as soon as I heard you were landing here. I’m excited to be able to continue following you. Congrats!

  5. Bill Russell says:

    Welcome aboard.

  6. Voldomer says:

Welcome Tony! I always enjoyed reading your previous blog and am very excited about the heavy posting you anticipate here. I was already worried about how I would survive the July 31 trading deadline without your frequent updates.

  7. I Miss The 51's says:

I’ve been reading this blog for the last year. It’s really great, but Tony joining has gotten me to sign up. I can’t wait to get my Dodger updates. Welcome Tony!!!

  8. FHR says:

    Tony! Welcome back. Sounds exciting.

  9. dodgerwine says:

I am looking forward to your posts, with such a wonderful and exciting season underway it is a shame that you and Diamond Leung were not able to follow the Dodgers on a daily basis. At least for now through LA Dodger Talk we will be able to have you on a daily basis.

  10. ebbetsfld says:

Here we go! Enjoy your “chillin time”, can’t wait for you to get back full bore!

  11. Blue Haze says:

I think Tony is really Mario, he creatively got Mark to accept him with open arms. Nice work, Mario, errrr, Tony.

  12. Harold says:

Welcome back Tony. I have read your blog for quite some time and was very upset for you that the Daily News felt they no longer needed your services. They are wrong.

I tried to get onto your blog, many times in fact, and could never get on it. Mark’s blog is one of the few that I can crack, for some reason.

In any event, looking forward to your contributions. One suggestion if I may. Let the Manny Ramirez thing lay dormant, if possible for the time being, so we can continiue to enjoy the young Dodgers and vets who are still playing and not have a Ramirez cloud over our heads.

    GO DODGERS!!

  13. I’m glad to see that everyone is as excited about Tony as Mark and I are! We have some big plans for this site and it does not just center around good content. We want to make the site more engaging for you the reader. This will be like no other blog site out there when we’re done with our first few rounds of changes! So please bear with us over the next few weeks as we may be updating different things on the site. We also value everybody’s feedback so feel free to email us with any suggestions or comment here. Bear in mind that not everything will be possible to do but we will try.

    Thanks

It’s hard to teach an old Dog like me new tricks. Are we going to have a daily thread like we had on the “old and lousy” board, or at least two or three open threads where you can post your “thought” for the moment on the “new and improved” version?

It is important to ascertain an answer as soon as possible because, as we all know, there is nothing worse than taking the time necessary to put together a truly great post that nails an issue and sends all its readers rolling in the aisles with some first rate humor, then getting out the magnifying glass to “edit” the post so you don’t look like a complete idiot and then “say it” only to find out you just sent your post to blog purgatory where it will sit at the end of a long thread only to be read by the janitor when he comes in to close the thread up a few hours later.

Should I look for a daily thread, or just the one that seems the most relevant to what I’m going to say?

Tony, it’s going to be great having you on board with us here at the best baseball blog on the internet. We all look forward to communicating with you and getting some real, reliable inside information on our Dodgers. I’m glad you landed on your feet, so to speak and I hope Diamond finds a similar new gig. You two were the best and got treated the worst. But that seems to be the way of the world. If someone is constantly giving you a load of crap for what you’re doing, you must be doing something right.

  15. DavidB says:

    Tony,
Welcome! I have been reading this blog for two years. I dont speek out much whne it comes to the daily posts; I am glad to see that you have come aboard and joined a already great site.

  16. Mark Timmons says:

    Lawdog,

Diamond and I are set to talk this weekend or Monday at the latest!

Insofar as a Daily Thread – we have not decided that, but as of right now, you can post on any that have a comment box.

    Suggestions are appreciated.

  17. grumpy3b says:

Fantastic news for you Tony!! Of course that is because it is good for us out here, I mean as long as we get what we want, who cares about the other guy getting paid…hehehe. Even though I had only begun reading your comments this ST, I missed your insights and enthusiasm once it all changed. ;) I think the move was akin to trading Pedro for Delino DeShields.

I look forward to reading your comments the rest of the way…hope it all works out well for you!!

  18. Fan Since 53 says:

Welcome Tony Jackson! Like many, I have read your stuff for many years and was quite disappointed to learn that the Daily News had let you go. They obviously do not have a clue about the Dodgers nor their (very) loyal fans.

Mark – Thank you for bringing Tony on-board as a member of the LA Dodger Talk family. This is every bit as good of a signing as the O-Dog signing – LOL!

    You guys ROCK!

  19. Brooklyn Dodger says:

    Tony,

Great to have you back providing us with timely daily Dodger news. Also, nice to know that you landed solidly on both feet.

My selfish side wants to see you posting here “full steam” immediately. But my better half says enjoy your daughter’s graduation, enjoy the visit with your family in Arkansas, and take all the time you need chilling in Phoenix. You’ve earned all of that. In the meantime, I and many other loyal bloggers look forward to your full-time return. It will surely be worth the wait.

  20. tony jackson says:

Thanks to all of you for the great comments. I remember when we started that other blog, it took more than a year to get this many comments on a single post. Another advantage to not having the burden of newspaper writing is that not only will I have time to post more entries, I’ll have more time to answer your comments and keep more of a dialogue going. I’m getting more excited about all this with each passing day.

  21. Ricardo says:

That´s great news! Welcome back, Tony. I´m so glad you´re back. Thanks Mark and Miguel!

  22. Buddy says:

Welcome back Tony! It’s great to see you online again!

  23. Dave R. says:

Awesome Tony. Good luck in the new venture.

I can now officially take the LADN blog off my favorites and add this one.

It’s hard to see how one can make a living off this, but best of luck.

  24. D'Accardo42 says:

Great to have you back covering the Dodgers Tony.

    Hey Tony,
Welcome back! Glad to see you back on your feet!
You should link this blog to twitter.
    Thanks,

  35. You certainly were missed Tony! You have always provided the PERSONAL part of the scoop, which seems to be the missing componant of most other Dodger blogs. 20-30 posts a day? Sounds like fun…I will definitey be along for the ride!
You're on the top of my Google Reader list again.
Enjoy the time with your daughter. Congratulations!

  36. Pete says:
