Get out those brooms again ….

.. because if the Dodgers can win tomorrow’s getaway matinee at Coors, they will have swept a series of at least three games for the fifth time this season. Throw in that two-game blanking of the Snakes a few weeks ago, and they’re actually going for their sixth series sweep.

Did anyone notice that Matt Kemp has now gone 10 consecutive plate appearances without striking out? I mean, I realize he went 0 for 5 tonight, technically without a ball leaving the infield (his ninth-inning popup, when he was robbed of a bloop single on a nice play by Omar Quintanilla, sort of left the infield). But the fact he put five balls in play has to count as some degree of moral victory, does it not?

broomsElsewhere on the positive side, Casey Blake continued to sizzle, going 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles and driving in three runs with one of them. Eric Milton won his first major-league game since 2006. The two-Juan punch went a combined 5 for 9 with three runs scored and two RBI. And Orlando Hudson went 2 for 3 with two walks, running his career-high hitting streak to 16 games.

Elsewhere on the negative side, Andre Ethier continued to flail, going 0 for 4 with a pair of strikeouts, although he did draw a walk and score a run. And each of the relievers the Dodgers used — Cory Wade, Ramon Troncoso and Brent Leach — walked either the first or second batter they faced. All three entered with leads of at least three runs. Nevertheless, they did combine to pitch four scoreless, hitless innings.

Pods finally lost, ending their 10-game streak, so the lead goes back to 8 1/2. Dodgers go to 32-15. Oh, and I read your comments on my last post, and you’re all exactly right. There is absolutely NO reason why I or anyone else should be checking that old blog — no matter how much perverse pleasure we might be getting from doing so.

    A sweep would be sweet!

  2. Badger says:

Ausmus, Castro, Pierre and Blake all hitting way over their heads. How long will this last? Kemp and Ethier are actually good hitters, how long will their troubles last?

Troncoso, Wade and Leach threw one less pitch in 3 innings than Milton did in 5. What's up with that?

This has been a strange ride. I keep waiting for the wheels to come off. I can't help it, we are on pace to win 110.

Here is something else strange, Blake and LaRoche both over .300.

    • Badger says:

Badger needs edit capability to correct his numbnutness.

The relievers went 4. But, the point is, they should come in and throw strikes.

    • Vigil says:

Ethier's troubles will last until/unless Ramirez comes back untroubled. ITMT, he should be platooned with Jamie Hoffman. It's really too bad the X-Man had to go on the DL at this golden opportunity in his career.

  3. Voldomer says:

Nice hitting by Ethier today. Maybe he is getting over the hump.

  4. Brooklyn Dodger says:

I believe that Ethier's troubles have been related to Manny's absence only in the sense that he seems to have been pressing and attempting to do too much, resulting in an approach at the plate that had him attempting to pull too much. After all, he was hitting behind Manny, not in front of him. The pitches he's seen during the slump aren't much different than those that preceded it. In the last few games he seems to be making a concerted effort to hit the ball where it's pitched, resulting in better at bats and better results. He still has a ways to go, but at least he appears headed in the right direction.

And Tony, I still get perverse pleasure from visiting that old blog. Was there only minutes ago, and the lheir last thread was posted on 5/25 regarding the 16-6 victory.

In the long run, I believe that Ethier will profit from what he's learned since Manny's absence. In fact, the same can probbly be said for the team that has been winning without him. Adversity has its advantages.
