It Wasn’t The Money, It Was The Manny!

money-mannyWith no indication that Scott Boras was willing to accept less than a 4 or 5 year deal, the Dodgers gave Manny an opportunity to take a 1-year/$25 million deal and have an the option for another payday, probably as a DH in the AL.  This was after a 2-year/$45 million deal was ignored by the player’s agent.  In a blink of an eye, the deal was rejected by Manny and Boras, officially closing the door (I believe) on the Manny Ramirez Era in LA.   It never was about the money with McCourt.  Frank and Jamie have shown they will spend when needed, and in the past they spent when it wasn’t needed, or prudent.  They are trying not to do the same thing again.   It wasn’t about the Money, but it was about the Manny.  Manny was on his best behavior as a Dodger, but there is a high liklihood that had he not gotten that 4 or 5 year/$100 million deal, he’d return to the sulking, self-absorbed idiot he was in Boston.   Add in the fact that he’ll be 38 next year and the possibility of diminishing skills and sub-par defense, and you may understand (or not) why the Dodgers were loathe to go for a long-term deal with Manny.  HELLO, EVERY OTHER TEAM IN BASEBALL FEELS THE SAME WAY & THERE’S A REASON WHY!     Yes, the Giants may sign Manny (good luck with that!), but not at the amount offered by the Dodgers.  The Dodgers are done with Manny, and while I have written about him here today, I too am done with it and I am moving on.   It’s time to set our sights on Abreu or Dunn and Wolf (Perez signed yesterday).   Who knows, Hudson could become a Dodger?  It might be time to consider him at 2B and trade DeWitt or Abreu along with Pierre.  Move along, Folks.  There’s nothing to see here!

I am upset with the fact that we made a dope-fiend move to get Manny and Blake so that we could win ONE, I SAID ONE, post-season series and gave up four really good prospects in the process.  The jury is still out on Meloan and Morris, but I have always felt that Andy LaRoche will be a TOP major league 3B and it’s likely that Carlos Santana will be an excellent hitter.  I’m not sure Santana will be a good catcher, but the guy appears to be a hitter.  It’s likely he’ll end up back in the OF.    I would be a lot happier right about now if we had LaRoche at 3B instead of Casey Blake, and Santana, Meloan and Morris in our minor league stable.

Personally, I think it’s more likely that Manny will end up with the Angels than any other team…

Rob Neyer of ESPN.COM  gives his take on Andy LaRoche:

Does anyone remember how many times last spring and summer I wrote that the Dodgers should have given Andy LaRoche the everyday job at third base? I don’t, either. But it was a lot. And if they’d taken my advice, they wouldn’t have finished in first place. So that’s on me.

This year, though? This is Andy LaRoche’s year. Dejan Kovacevic in the Post-Gazette:

That torn right thumb is finally, fully healed, Andy LaRoche will insist. But the confidence that clearly crumbled in those two mercilessly cruel months that followed his trade to Pittsburgh last summer?
Might take a while. ”I won’t lie to you: I was down on myself. I really was,” the Pirates’ third baseman was recalling the other day. “Nothing was going my way, and it felt like I was putting all my energy just into fighting through it.”One element to which LaRoche clings: He was ranked the No. 1 prospect in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ system entering the 2007 season by Baseball America, No. 33 overall in baseball entering last season. He is a career .295 hitter in the minors, with a terrific .382 on-base percentage and 95 home runs in 1,800 at-bats. And he is only 25 years old, with 111 games in the majors.

“That’s the thing, the knowledge that I’ve hit all my life,” LaRoche said. “I just need to start fresh.”
Management is committed to giving LaRoche a chance as the everyday third baseman, partly because he is out of options, partly because he was one of the key acquisitions in the Jason Bay trade, but largely because of his potential. He is not a complete lock, but he would need to struggle at that 2008 level for prospect Neil Walker or someone else to have a chance.

No mention here of LaRoche’s absurdly low — by his standards, anyway — hit percentage; only 21 percent of the balls he put into play resulted in hits. Earlier in his pro career, he was always in the high 20s. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he was terribly unlucky. Hit percentages for hitters aren’t like hit percentages for pitchers. As you know, major league pitchers all tend to give up roughly a .300 batting average on balls in play. More than 10 or 20 points either way can usually be attributed to luck. Generally speaking.

Hitters do tend to hover around 30 percent, but some are naturally going to be closer to 35 percent or 25 percent. Come to think of it, 21 percent is terribly low. Impossible, almost. Of course, it’s almost impossible to hit .166 in 223 at-bats, too. And LaRoche managed to do that, too. Maybe those two things are somehow related?

Anyway, the Pirates’ confidence is heartening. I don’t doubt that LaRoche’s thumb was hurting him, I don’t doubt that LaRoche was down on himself, and I don’t doubt that he was terribly unlucky. If his thumb’s healed up and he’s happy with himself and he’s reasonably lucky, he’s going to be pretty decent, at least. So I’ll go out on a limb and predict that the 2009 Pirates will boast the No. 1 all-brother 1B/3B combination in major league history.

  • A word to Barry Bonds and Roger Clemons:  Get ready for prison!
  • Don’t get too excited about our signing Scott Strickland….

  1. Blue Haze says:

I posted this before you wrote today’s topic blog, but it is more appropriate for this discussion so here’s a repeat.

    1. No talk at all about ManRam on KNBR this afternoon, not for the 2 hrs. I listened to anyway (Razor and Mr. T Show).

    2. Borass is infallible and NEVER makes a mistake (at least that is what I have been told).

    3. Translation of Borass-speak: When he says “the market is heating up for Manny” = “I don’t have a damn thing on the table and I have very little interest for him uniformly around the league, but I never make mistakes.”

    4. I think Manny has made a big mistake listening to Borass, yeah he may get a contract this year from us or someone else, but his negotiations this off-season really only cemented the fact among GMs that he is going to prove to be a pain for any team that signs him, if not now then very soon. GMs around the league are not going to get excited about pursuing him for one, two, three or four year contracts. Manny and The Infallible One really painted themselves into a corner with this whole negotiation strategy that they chose.

    5. There really is only two questions: Will Manny sign with the Giants just to spite the Dodgers? or Now that the Dodgers have at least offered another contract, does this signal some actually communication and negotiations can take place with The Infallible One and ManRam eventually signs with the Dodgers (probably back in the neighborhood of the original offer made right after last season)?

  2. Badger says:

Of course he turned that deal down. Anyone really surprised? Not me. I have said for the last 3 months what will be needed to get Manny in a Dodger uniform and I think it’s still true. It’s at least a three year contract.

    Obviously this isn’t over.

And I wonder how it will be for Adam Dunn each time he strikes out, which will be about 150 times this year. He is part of the back-up plan and NOT the fans choice.

If we are firm on the no third year, then time to move on to Plan B.

  3. DRomo says:

    Mark said it best!

“move along there is nothing to see here”

I think if the Angels are willing to fork over the $$$ and 3 yrs they will land Manny too. He is a great fit there. And although I hate the Angels they would be crazy good with Manny in that lineup. If Scoiscia can keep his ego in check long enough to let his players play it might work.

Lets move on with the quickness. Sign Dunn, Wolf and Hudson. Hudson is said to have been considering signing a 1 yr deal to show he can stay healthy. Do it! Dunn has said that LA would be his first choice. All of these guys make us a better team.

What makes me sick is where ever Manny ends up, fans will sing the same old IGNORANT song. “The McCourts are too cheap.” “The Dodgers let another one go” The McCourts did everything they could this time. They would be crazy to bid against themselves or give in to a 4-5 yr contract to a guy with Manny’s injury history and mental history. The Dodgers offered Manny two fair deals. Of course they could have sweetened either deal a little but that is negotiations (offer then counter). Boras and Manny stood firm on a ridiculous 4-5 yr. demand and will not negotiate.

  4. Bill Russell says:

I am starting to move my camp to the other side. The Dodgers need to sign Wolf, and try one last offer for Manny at 3 years. If that’s rejected, then move on. If Dunn and Hudson can be had for less money that may be a good plan B. Borass has created a Circus with this one and everyone is growing tired of this mess. I feel the 1 & 2 year offers were fair but the 3 year deal the Dodgers made was an insult. If that’s what they’re holding out for then why not give it one last attempt at 3 years. If negotiations start up for Dunn, the Manny camp may come crawling back. The thought of Manny being a Giant is sickening. I am hoping the Angels jump in but somehow I don’t think they will. Manny won’t be happy as a Washington National.

  5. Blue Haze says:

The way things have gone, I am beginning to wonder if The Infallible One ever really intended on ManRam being a Dodger, unless they just coughed up 4 or 5 years at huge, huge dollars. I think the Infallible One always planned to play the two ends against the middle, all along. He has been bluffing and posturing the whole time and apparently never really tried to negotiate with the Dodgers. The Infallible One’s pattern was to get an offer, reject it, make no attempt to negotiate, then throw out a red herring when no one came to his door. The Infallible One will prove to be a “door closer” for Manny and not a “door opener”. I really will be shocked if any other GM will go 3 years for his services, just too many attitudes and egos on display from the ManRam camp. I think that The Infallible One can put away his Visine, I think we are going to see some blinking (squirming).

  6. jerry says:

only in baseball does the employee tell the owner how much money the employer has to pay.. totally stupid..this some day will destroy baseball.

  7. Mark Timmons says:

That’s the smartest thing you have ever said, Jerry!

  8. Mark Timmons says:

    1. Furcal SS
    2. Hudson 2B
    3. Ethier RF
    4. Kemp CF
    5. Loney 1B
    6. Martin C
    7. Dunn LF
    8. Blake/DeWitt 3B

Move the players around in the lineup, depending upon who is hot!

  9. jerry says:

let put manny on . D .TRUMP..THE APPRINTICE

  10. ken says:

Say Goodbye to Manny. Time to sign Wolf, bring in Dunn for a visit just to show Manny that he should at least make a counter offer, Sign Hudson then sign Sheets and go with pitching. Dunn is not a good fit because that would create a lineup with too many left hand hitters and strike out kings (3).

  11. Badger says:

No third year from the Dodgers – NO DEAL.

Plan B it is. I am down with it too. This B.S. has gone on long enough.

Having said that, I am on record – 3 at 70 would have been my final offer.

  12. tired dodger fan says:

Good morning everyone, I have been one of the guys here wanting manny on the dodgers. Today im done with the manny situation, and i hope the dodgers are too. Manny is one greedy bastard, and when the dodgers move on and sign dunn and whoever else, they will be just as good. Whenever you get the chance to sign two or three good players instead of one its a good thing, Manny is almost at the end of his career and wants a team to give him a 4 or 5 year deal? that is just greed. He’s good for 2 maybe 3 thats it. If thats not good for him then he can move on and try to trick someone else into filling his demands. Dunn,Hudson, and sheets or wolf are better production than one player for the same amount of cash. Thats just my onpinion. But emough is enough
    thanks.

  13. GoNzO says:

A lot of you are talking about Dunn like he’s chopped liver. The guy hits a ton of HR’s gets his RBI’s and good OBP. Ryan Howard strikes way more than him and plays in a Babe Ruth Field. Stick Dunn in the 4 hole.

Hudson would be nice, but that would mean the end of the Dewitt/Abreu era in LA. If one of those two or both like mark said could be packaged with Pierre, it could get us something.

Finally, the Key here is Sheets. I’m willing to sacrifice the 1st rounder this year. Sheets will shore up our rotation. He could even be our #2. I’d rather have a glut of average to above average players that play and hustle for the team than an ingrate.

  14. Badger says:

I like Dunn. Always have. He just isn’t near the hitter than Manny is. He is LH, and we already have 2 very good middle of the order LH hitters in our lineup. Manny was a better fit.

But, sometimes you just has to move on.

That’s a good lineup that mover has put together. Make it so. And get a pitcher or two and we will be competitive.

  15. Badger says:

Oh and one more thing, this is for my good friend Haze:

    bleep Borass.

  16. DRomo says:

The Giants GM was on XMradio and said they don’t really have interest in Manny. He said “We already have 3 outfielders and if we bring him in we would be forced to move people via trade and we don’t have the flexability to do that this late into the winter.”
Of course you take that with a grain of salt because unless they truly are in dire financial straights you can always make room for Manny! It is just funny to me how Manny has created this bed and is being forced to lie in it. Ned is looking weasle-ish by saying this isn’t a final offer. At this point he should move on. I am glad to hear on the radio and on this site the backlash has begun. Screw Manny! If you want to be here we will love you, but if you don’t then get the hell out.

  17. mario says:

Once again Bill were on the same page..
we have to offer 3 years to sign one of the best players in baseball…if he rejects it then plan b is not bad at all…Dunn and Hudson in this lineup will be sick..but Id rather have Abreu, dude hits .300 and drives in a ton of runs

  18. DRomo says:

3 yrs & how much per? That is the question. The only thing that matters to Manny/Boras is the $$$ involved.

  19. Badger says:

    3 and 70

Manny isn’t close to being done as a hitter. In the next 3 years, I say he will hit 99 home runs and drive in 333 runs. What is that worth?

I also still believe he is an American League hitter.

  20. mario says:

Right on Badger. We said that weeks ago

  21. Bill Russell says:

Chicks dig the long ball Mario and Dunn hits twice as many HR’s then Abreu. Dunn may hit a few more then Manny in 2009. I like Abreu but if we are forced with another left handed bat in our lineup, I would go with the power stick. I still can’t believe Manny is rejecting the only offers that are placed on the table without a counter offer. He may be a Washington National for 3 years $54 million. Who in their right mind would want that besides me?

  22. mario says:

so Bill you’d rather have a .230 hitter that hits 40 HRS , 100 RBI
or a guy who is a solid .300 hitter, 20 HRS 20 SB, 100 RBI?

Dunn may get the HRS, but he drives in exactly the same as Abreu..
so I guess it means alot of HRS with nobody on….

but F..k this sign Manny already, give him 3 years!!!

  23. Badger says:

I think in the right lineup Dunn could have a monster year. He also needs to get back to the maple bat. I know he said he was not going to use it again, but, he is a guy who could hit 50. He is only 29 and has a career .900 OPS.

I would take him …………….. IF we don’t sign Manny.

Manny is still the best fit in our lineup. But at this point, it would seem we are just not interested in what it would take to sign him, so let’s go the cheaper, I mean, the most cost effective route. As long as we get some better pitching, I have no problem with that lineup mover has posted.

  24. DRomo says:

“I assure you, we’ll do anything we can to win,” he said. “We’re going to spend wisely, be competitive, focus on winning. Fans get excited about competitive teams playing hard and winning. I don’t believe they get excited about an owner mouthing off how much money he’ll spend.”
    Frank McCourt

I love it. I am a McCourt fan I don’t care what anyone says. Because he isn’t in the media everyday mugging it up and asking to be star of the show doesn’t make him a bad owner. The O’Malleys were great and does anyone remember what their voices sound like?

My point is they gambled and spent big on Schmidt, Pierre, Mueller,Jones and Furcal. Were they all successful? No! But it wasn’t for lack of money! Big names like Carlos Lee & Soiano didn’t want to play here, what can we do? Before we go over the Vlad Guerrero thing again, the ownership transition held that deal from happening. Bottom line the guy has spent the money when he could. Bitch about ticket, parking and beer prices all you want but look at NY and Boston prices. Do you want to spend that much? I think we all need to chill out and not think this guy is bad for us everytime. That is the easy way out!

  25. Blue Haze says:

From interview with McCourt in Dodgers.com today, hmmm, I think that Frankie is saying what myself, Mark and a couple of others have been saying all along. See below:

“The other thing is, the agent [Scott Boras] is challenging to work with and we’ve tried hard. We’ve made three efforts and we still have not received a specific number from the agent, and I don’t know what to tell you. At some point, you have to move on and start to get ready to win a championship.”

With Spring Training opening in less than two weeks, McCourt said he did not know when the time to move on would be, but called it “inevitable.”

“There needs to be closure to this,” he said. “We’re not done looking at options to signing the player for this season. We’ll just take it a step at a time. It should be clear that signing Manny was and is a priority.”

McCourt said he has not spoken directly to Ramirez, but said he would welcome the chance. He implied that the lack of communication from Boras during the past three months has been a contributing factor to the absence of a deal, stopping short of suggesting that Ramirez didn’t want to re-sign with the Dodgers.

“It’s not an exaggeration,” McCourt said. “I’ve done thousands of deals in my life and I’ve learned that communication, the give-and-take to find common ground, is the key to all those deals. It seems to be, when there isn’t conversation, it’s much more challenging to make a deal.”

    —–

Hmmmm. Again, I don’t think The Infallible One ever intended on signing with the Dodgers, if he had, he would have at least made a phone call instead of just blowing off the Dodgers’ offers (confirmed by McCourt in above interview). The Infallible One wanted the Dodgers to bite, just to help him build his case with other teams and drive up the price. You have to admit it now, Ned and Frank played this thing perfectly, you can’t negotiate a deal if the other side has no intention of operating in good faith, otherwise you are just being a tool. Negotiations are negotiations, doesn’t matter what the business, the principles still apply.

So now we move onto Plan B or Plan C and make the best of it, that’s life, you can cry about spilled milk or you can pick yourself up and move on. It is time for the Dodgers to move on and now get focused on making the best improvements they can to the team. Be thankful there are still a few hitters on the market that could help the team. I think that ManRam would have become a distraction very soon and would have worn out his welcome in LA (both with the team and the fans). A-holes just don’t change over the long haul, they always start to stink up everyplace they inhabit. Food for thought.

  26. Badger says:

Boras did communicate Haze. He said no. Maybe you didn’t read about it, but it was in all the papers.

As for Manny being an asshole, hey, many of them are. If they didn’t allow assholes to play, there would be no MLB. It has been said in many places that both sides of that deal in Boston handled it badly. It’s in the past. It may be time to move away from that and think about the next three years.

What is killing this deal is the fact the Dodgers won’t guarantee more years. OK, we get it, not going to do it. Frankie says they “are not receiving a specific number from the agent” – well DUH! Boras isn’t going to tell you what the highest bid is dummy, he isn’t that stupid. If you don’t have the highest bid, you ain’t getting the property.

So, the deal is, let them go somewhere else. OK fine, let’s go get the other playes and tee it up. Manny will play with somebody. Sure hope it’s in the other league.

  27. Michael says:

Lets sign Dunn and Hudson and watch Scott Boras slither under a rock. I love Manny and want him but I think I would almost prefer the Blue to kick him in the, oops, he doesn’t have any.

  28. mario says:

If were gonna receive a first round pick for Manny,
I’d rather sign Abreu, Wolf, and Sheets..
    pitching still wins championships….
Man I sound like Mark now….

  29. Michael says:

Hey Manny, your agent just hooked you up with a 1 year deal worth 4 mil with the Chiba Lotte Marines. Sayonara.

  30. Blue Haze says:

Maybe you didn’t read the article that I posted, uh-hmm, I believe that McCourt might have mentioned the quote that you attributed to me. Here I will paste it again for you:

McCourt said he has not spoken directly to Ramirez, but said he would welcome the chance. He implied that the lack of communication from Boras during the past three months has been a contributing factor to the absence of a deal, stopping short of suggesting that Ramirez didn’t want to re-sign with the Dodgers.

    —-

There is that simple enough for you (psst you’re just working to hard to always disagree with me, do you yourself a favor and act decently, you are becoming a punch line). I try to not deal with you but obviously you are so taken by me that you need my special attention. In an effort to meet your needs I will begin all of my posts with a special address to you, I will give it until Opening Day and see if that helps you to be noticed by me. One more thing, again, please read all posts twice (minimum, you just lack comprehension skills.

“I hope that Badger can be a good little boy and have a great evening. You know, how much Blue Haze appreciates you Badger and really wants the best for you. You have sweet dreams and do your best to say nice things to people. Remember Badger, if you don’t have something nice to say, maybe you shouldn’t say anything at all. Badger, I look forward to your cheery greeting and loving message tomorrow morning. BTW, did I mention how much I like your new shoes, they look really cool and I bet you can run faster and jump higher in them, they sure make you look like a champion.”

Sheesh, I think it might be appropriate to paste something from my earlier post that seems fitting food for thought for the ol’ Badger, you probably missed it: A-holes just don’t change over the long haul, they always start to stink up everyplace they inhabit.

A little more food for thought, it is becoming quite obvious to me and probably deserves a repost:

Transference is a phenomenon in psychoanalysis characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings for one person to another. One definition of transference is “the inappropriate repetition in the present of a relationship that was important in a person’s childhood.”[1] Another definition is “the redirection of feelings and desires and especially of those unconsciously retained from childhood toward a new object.”[2] Still another definition is “a reproduction of emotions relating to repressed experiences, esp[ecially] of childhood, and the substitution of another person … for the original object of the repressed impulses.”[3] Transference was first described by Sigmund Freud, who acknowledged its importance for psychoanalysis for better understanding of the patient’s feelings.

According to “The Source” published in June 2001, “During transference, people turn into a “biological time machine”. A nerve is struck when someone says or does something that reminds you of your past. This creates an “emotional time warp” that transfers your emotional past and your psychological needs into the present. In less poetic terms, a transference reaction means that you are reacting to someone in terms of what you need to see, you are afraid of or what you see when you know very little about the person. This all happens without you knowing why you feel and react the way you do.”

Dude I have you so pegged, that is what is really your hard-on for me. I have called you for what you are for a long time, and it is driving you crazy. It is really sad and you are getting quite predictable. Enough already, go take your misery back to some hole and leave us alone, this is getting ridiculous.

    —–
Sorry guys, but this a-hole is just getting to the point of total derangement and obsession with me, I don’t know what to tell the decent participants in here at this point (okay I have a few ideas but I’ll hold off for now).

    PEACE!

  31. mark says:

As much as I hate to say it, it’s probably not over with Manny. Nobody else can pay him what we can. Maybe Ned is going to come back with $50 mil/2-years. Who knows? This is a wierd free agency period.

  32. mark says:

    Haze,

That is pretty close to over the line. Come on… I don’t want to have to edit.

  33. mario says:

    let’s edit Mark

  34. Anonymous says:

Juan Pierre, Broxton and cash for Greinke and Soria, then cash and a player to be named later for Jermaine Dye. With the money leftover we could probably get O.Hudson too. Time to move on.

  35. Mark Timmons says:

    Anon,

Why would KC do that? Do you have inside knowledge that they are on crack?

  36. DRomo says:

Mark, there is a reason Anonymous didn’t leave his name. Why not DeWitt and Hu for A-Rod? Gee-whiz, that is the reason I stay off other sites…to avoid pie in the sky fan rumors.

Anyway, I am happy to hear Boras is expected to meet w/ Nedco tomorrow.

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090203&content_id=3796510&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp&partnerId=rss_mlb

I get the feeling this deal will get done. I feel ther will be some resolution by the weekend. Just in time for me to go to Las Vegas this weekend and place tens of dollars on the Dodgers for 2009.

  37. Badger says:

Haze has no sense of humor. Never has. Likely never will. Notta to worry, I will try my best to ignore him.

I too don’t think it’s over with Manny. The Dodgers are his best fit. Isn’t it time to get this stuff done? mario is right, put the third year on the table with the time limit that we discussed last week. If it’s rejected, or ignored, let’s get one of those other hitters, sign a ton of pitching and go win the West again.

  38. DRomo says:

we need pitching as well as #99.

  39. Blue Haze says:

“Good morning Badger, hope you had a nice rest and are feeling good and want to have a nice day. Did you have a good breakfast this morning? Good, now be good and treat others like you want to be treated?”

Mark, you have got to be kidding me? come on, you know very well what has been going on for years with Badger. Just because Badger hates W, he has transferred his hatred towards me (all I did was tell him I supported the war and very little else of what W did, of course that didn’t matter to Badger, I was “Bushie”, still makes me laugh byw) when I called him on it and told him to stop bullying people and taking cheap shots, asked him repeatedly and often to stop bringing up politics on a Dodger fan board, he just became more vocal and nasty. When I have extended olive branches he has consistently snapped them off and become more of an a-hole, which I also called him on (and he never disputed, btw). Since this happened on another site, most in here have no idea what the hell is going on, but you do, so let’s be serious. I am fed up with the guy, I really believe what I have posted, the guy has a “fatal attraction” for me, or he really is blinded by his ridiculous rage against W. So you tell me what I should do? I have tried nice, tried joking with him, positive comments on his “baseball takes”, but he wants to continue to be a sniper. You let me know what you think, in fact, send me an email, you’ve got it, I would really like to hear from you, this thing has just gotten to be over the top crazy. I’ll look for your email. Thanks.

I like the site, but some people are just miserable and are determined to spread their misery to others.

    ——

Article today in the LASlimes reports The Infallible One has said that he is going to be talking to the Dodgers today (Wed.)about ManRam. Maybe some of the choice comments directed right at him by McCourt has The Infallible ready to actually negotiate rather than dictate. I think many Dodger fans have sort of moved on and may actually be pissed that ManRam is still in the picture at all. However, if he plays hard and hits the snot out of the ball, I am sure he will be forgiven. At this point, I think the Dodgers really are the only team that can sign him (to anything close to what he has wanted, sans a long-term contract). I think The Infallible One has really done this client a dis-service this off-season, the tarnish among GMs may be too deep to ever be removed for Manny at this point, unless he changes agents possibly (ain’t going to happen, but you never know). I’ll root for Manny but if he doesn’t come, I think I wouldn’t mind that either, at this point.

  40. Badger says:

What the heck are you talking about now Haze? You were a jerk on that other board, everyone that was there knows it.

And now this? I don’t get it. What set you off yesterday?

  41. Bill Russell says:

Manny is the best fit if this doesn’t drag on more then one more week. I am almost thinking Hudson, Wolf and Abreu/Dunn would be a better makeup. Blake, Furcal, Hudson and Loney would be a sick infield. With either one of the LF guys remaining , Kemp and Ethier. I see no easy outs in that lineup. If Manny decides to sign with the Dodgers, DeWitt will remain at 2nd. Wolf needs to get signed because we need him either way. Time is running out on #99 for him to make history at the Ravine.

    Furcal
    Hudson
    Ethier
    Kemp
    Loney
    Martin
    Abreu
    Blake

    or
    Furcal
    Ethier
    Manny
    Loney
    Kemp
    Martin
    Dewitt
    Blake

    Which one do you like?

  42. Badger says:

I think the first one gets us some pitching to go along with it.

  43. mario says:

Both are killer Line-ups for the season Bill.
But for the post season I’d take the one with Manny..

  44. Chucky says:

    Dear Mark:

Please control your regulars (Haze and Badger).

I enjoy your website but feel that personal issues should NEVER be brought into it. This is about the Dodgers and gives everything a chance to discuss idea, thoughts and feelings about the Dodgers. Personal issues should never come into play OR should anyone EVER get personal with their posts.

  45. Badger says:

    Dear Chucky…

Where did I get personal? I still don’t understand what it was that I did here that got Haze so pissed off. Look at the above posts – where did I get personal with him? When I made the joke about the rejection being in all the papers? If that’s the case, wouldn’t you say Haze has some really thin skin?

And by the way…… who are you? You don’t post here. What do you care?

  46. mario says:

    Chucky is Hazes mult

  47. tired dodger fan says:

Good morning everyone, why dont the dodgers offer manny a third year,is it because they still think they will overbid against themselves? Its obvious that no other team is intrested in manny more than the dodgers. I dont understand the overbid situation, you want a really good player on your team then its going to cost you. Why would the dodgers even bother to sign manny at a lower price and have him acting like he did before. I say pay the man or move on.

  48. Anonymous says:

Why would KC do that? Probably the same reason that J. Damon, C Beltran, J Dye don’t play there anymore. P.S. Looks like S.Boras has crawled out of his hole. I’ll predict it will go down as, 3 years/ $80-85 million with a 4th year club option @25 mil or a $10 mil buyout.

  49. Badger says:

K.C. could do something like that if we pick up half of Pierre’s salary. They get an exciting player that is a role model for their young squad (nobody works harder than Pierre) and Broxton is inexpensive for a while.

mario, did you mean Haze’s mule? Not sure what a mult is, but, I like the word.

Right on tired dodger fan. 3 and 80 would sew it up. I think 3 and 70 with your other terms is more than fair. But, I like the way you think.

  50. Chucky says:

The issue with Blogs is that anyone can read them (as they are in the public domain). I am a reader who enjoys each of yours’ opinion and who is a life long dodger fan. I think this is a great site that supplies me with great insight into my beloved Dodgers. I believe that all the regular contributors to this site are intelligent, insightful people who honestly love the Dodgers.

I appreciate all of you but please understand that this site is not just for the regular contributors but for the general public also. I do not have the time to consistenly contribute to the site but have done so in the past.

I am just asking that we keep this blog to the topic, THE DODGERS.

    So I do CARE.

  51. Badger says:

    Fair enough.

And I will respect your point of view. Thanks.

  52. mario says:

Mult is short for multiple, as in multiple screen names, its used alot on another forum I post on…sternfannetwork.com….for Howard Stern fans….

  53. Badger says:

    Oh, got it.

    From YardBarker:

It’s the end of January and there are three big names left in the outfield free agent class. Where will they land and how does it impact your fantasy teams?

    Adam Dunn

Everyone knows Adam Dunn can pound the ball. In fact he is the only player that I am seeing projected for over 40 homers by every source of projections. Whether he ends up in Washington, Atlanta, or the Dodgers (supposedly his preferred location), he will hit lots of home runs and hit for a low average. His projections are .250/40/100/95. His low batting average normally causes Dunn to fall in drafts. His ADP is currently 65 with a high of 44 and a low of 96, proving he can really fall almost 3 rounds later than expected cause people are scared of his poor Batting average.

My Verdict – If you can handle the low batting average he can be a great value pick. He has been dropping in mocks because he is not signed but does anyone think he will not sign somewhere? This is foolish.

    Bobby Abreu

Not really sure why he hasn’t been signed either. Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated recently pointed out in a article that “Abreu is one of three players in history with a .400 on-base percentage, 300 steals and 200 home runs (Barry Bonds and Rickey Henderson are the others) and one of three with 100 RBIs in each of the last three years (Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols are the others)”. My guess is that the teams most interested in him are also interested in Manny and Dunn so until one of them sign, the other wont either, creating the current stalemate that exists. If I was a betting man I would say he will end up as either a Dodger or a Met. He currently has an ADP of 43 going in the 4th round and projected .287/17/95/95/20.

My Verdict – Don’t let the fact that he is not signed yet scare you. Wherever he ends up, he will produce for his fourth round draft value

    Manny Ramirez

The Mets’ fans and many Met players, such as David Wright. are openly hoping for Manny to arrive in New York. Even their Manager Jerry Manuel has been quoted as saying “To have a shot at managing [him] would be exciting for me.” Other rumors put him on San Francisco or the with the Dodgers.
No matter where he lands, Manny will do well once he settles down and starts playing baseball. This is the key to Manny being Manny. He is an excellent hitter who should be able to produce .300/30/100/100 numbers without a doubt when he puts his mind to baseball. If he is worried about his 1 year contract or that he being mistreated by his teammates, the team ownership, his manager or the media then Manny is not thinking about baseball. That’s where the problem lies. So watch carefully where Manny ends up and if you draft him be prepared for what comes next. Either you will ride him to a championship or he can help sink your team.

My Verdict – Manny is too risky of a personality to pick where he should be drafted (early second-round). If he slips down to the fourth grab him.”

  54. Blue Haze says:

No I am not Chucky, but he and I hold the same sentiments about what boards should be used for, especially Dodger Fan boards.

Done with you Badger, you have some very serious issues that I hope you can deal with or keep some professional help for, and you have a very convenient (and dishonest) memory. I will skip over your posts, so be a AH all you want.

    _____

Manny and his agent just didn’t see what was coming around the corner. The Infallible One misplayed his cards and now is paying the consequences for that mistake. The strange thing is, either no owner has any money to sign players (except the Yankees of course) or no owner wants to take the chance of a Bad Manny showing up in his clubhouse. The Infallible One stayed with his tried and true methods of negotiations and didn’t make an adjustment in his MO. When the Dodgers didn’t bite, the Infallible One didn’t have a hand to play (card games are hard to play with no players or dealer at the table, that game is called Solitaire) and Manny got left out in the cold. If it were just about talent, ManRam would have been signed to a long-term deal months ago, but it is more than that, a lot more. He can’t get signed to a long-term deal or a short-term deal, makes you wonder what the Infallible One is whispering into Manny’s ear at this point. I doubt it will happen, but wouldn’t it be funny (funny ha-ha, not funny queer — Swing Blade) if Manny is still waiting at the altar when ST starts? You never know it could happen, stranger things have happened in this world.

  55. Blue Haze says:

Article from Ken Rosenthal that may interest some on the ManRam debacle:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9172834/Dodgers-have-options,-but-Manny-may-not

  56. Chucky says:

No I am not ANY HAZE, either purple or Blue.

That article from Rosenthal and the Mark’s latest post sums it up perfectly. I’m sick of this, Ned needs to move on.

I will always be a Dodger Fan but have some dignity Dodgers, stop playing the game and get the team together and concentrate of winning a Championship. I’m starting to lose my respect for the organization.
