Camelback Ranch or Bust!

rogerFriday night I fly to San Antonio, where Long-Time (read: “Old”) Dodgers’ Fan Roger Sobin will pick me up at the Airport and we will leave bright an early (well, maybe not bright) and drive through New Mexico.  We will stay overnight Saturday night close enough to Phoenix that we can make it about an hour before the FIRST GAME EVER AT CAMELBACK RANCH.  We will be there that whole first week of March – leaving after the game Saturday.  Billy Russell is going to meet up with us on Sunday, March 1st and anyone else can do so as well.  Billy has been tormenting me recently and I plan to have Roger work him over for me.   Roger is a retired  Presbyterian Minister – if you ever find four Presbyterian’s you’ll find a Fifth!  (bada bing, but seriously folks).  Roger told me he’d have the old buggy ready to go, but I had no idea….

By the looks of things, I may be the only one from the group there on March 1st. You had better bring some 3 in 1 oil and a bag full of apples.

I guess you have never seen Roger go to the whip…

    Have a blast!

    Lawdog,

Enjoyed your post over the weekend and thought I’d try to answer your question.

Before I get to that I would like to tell you that I did not intend my comments to be as accusatory as you seem to think they are. The revisionist history bit was more a tongue in cheek kind of a shot. Just a joke. Sorry if it hurt your feelings. Thanks for providing me with your source, but I did not expect you to produce the original document. I would have happily taken your word for it. Sport was a great magazine, I still have a few copies from the 60’s.

I do not have an autographed baseball card or a signed 8×10. What I do have is a postcard with a picture of the Duke on the front which Bev Snider sent to me. She had Duke sign the front and wrote a note to me. Post marked Fallbrook Dec 23 with a four cent stamp. Signature looks real to me.

I know about the bad knee, the legal trouble and the avocado ranch. Duke Snider night in the Coliseum was a double header against the Reds. In the second game Duke went 2 for 2 with a homer, a triple and a intentional walk. He gave all the Red players a case of avocados from the ranch.

Now as Buddy Ebsen used to say

    Whew Doggggggggggyyyyyyyyyssssssss

You sure can do the lawyer stuff, especially when you start changing what I said and putting words in my mouth. What you inferred and what was said were two different things. I never said that Duke had an ego problem. I said he had a big ego. Now I would think that every ball player who makes it to the bigs would have a big ego. The particular incidence I was thinking about when I read your post to was about Duke being given the bunt sign by then Manager Burt Shotton. After popping up the bunt attempt, Duke returned to the dugout and complained “It’s a damn shame to ask a 320 hitter to bunt” to which Shotton replied “ It’s a damn shame when the 320 hitter can’t get the bunt down” I may be paraphrasing a little but that’s how I remember reading it.

As far as political and or personal goes, These days I have much bigger concerns than any one persons political opinions. More power to ya. We are both Dodger fans. Don’t worry, we will sign Manny, Schmidt will be our ace and we will have a great year everyone here can enjoy.

    Way to play nice.

If I win the Powerball tommorow night, I’ll see you there. Otherwise I am eagerly looking foward to your updates. I’m sure this will be a road trip[Route 66] that you will never forget. P.S. Stay away from Charles Barkelys’ old haunts.
