Playoff Roster

I think Jeff Kent and Rafael Furcal have earned spots on the playoff roster.  That eliminates Sweeney and Hu being able to make the grade.  Maddux has to be there and Kuo is “iffy” so I would just shut Kuo down.  Here’s my roster:

Starters

Subs

Pitchers

1B – Loney

Garciparra (1B,SS. 3B)

Lowe

2B – DeWitt

Young (LF)

Billingsley

SS – Furcal

Ardion (C)

Kuroda

3B – Blake

Kent (2B)

Kershaw

LF – Ramirez

Berroa (SS)

Maddux

CF – Kemp

Pierre (LF, CF)

Beimel

RF – Ethier

Proctor

C - Martin

Park

Wade

Broxton

Saito

We’ll know soon - Let’s see how close I am.

RANTS & RAVES

  • I hate to say it, but Bill Plashke has it right about Manny
  • Peter Gammons is picking the Dodgers in the NLDS
  • From Baseball America:

Dodgers Final Report

Ivan DeJesus continues fast rise through the system

BEST PLAYER: In a full season at Double-A Jacksonville, shortstop Ivan DeJesus Jr. led the Southern League with a .419 on-base percentage, mostly the result of his compiling the second-most walks (76) in the circuit while striking out only 81 times.
The 21-year-old finished the season with a 23-game hitting streak, boosting his season average to .324, but he likely won’t get a chance to continue that streak with Jacksonville. In fact, after playing in the Arizona Fall League, DeJesus might go to spring training with a shot at cracking the Dodgers’ everyday lineup, depending on whether the club re-signs Rafael Furcal or some other veteran.

BEST PITCHER: After righthander James McDonald was promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas for the first time in early August—he went 2-1, 3.63 there—he made his major league debut in a September callup.

McDonald went from an 11th-round draft pick to one of the organization’s top pitching prospects by keeping his walk total microscopic. This year, he walked a total of 53 batters in 141 innings at Jacksonville and Las Vegas while striking out a batter an inning.

KEEP AN EYE ON: Outfielder Andrew Lambo was promoted all the way to Jacksonville from low Class A Great Lakes with a week left in the season just to gauge where he was developmentally. Last year’s fourth-round pick responded by hitting safely in all eight of his games with the Suns. Lambo, 20, hit .288/.346/.462 with 15 home runs in 472 at-bats at Great Lakes and .389/.421/.750 in 36 at-bats at Jacksonville. He also will play in the AFL.

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL

• While top catching prospect Lucas May was headed to the AFL after batting .230/.294/.403 for Jacksonville this season, A.J. Ellis, who hit .321/.436/.456 at hitter-friendly Las Vegas and projects as a big league backup, was called up to be the Dodgers’ third catcher for September.

• Scott Elbert, the Dodgers’ first-round pick in 2004 and their top lefthanded pitching prospect before shoulder surgery in June 2007 sidelined him for more than a year, made his major league debut on Aug. 29 at Arizona after being called up from Jacksonville.

    Bill Plashke has it right?
damn, ive lost all respect for you too

  2. Bill Russell September 29, 2008 1:10 am

Mark, you have the same playoff roster as I put together. Torre could replace D Young with Sweeney, Repko or Ozuna. That wouldn’t surprise me. As for resigning Manny, it’s too early to say what the correct move is. If the demands get to crazy then we need to replace him with an impact hitter Holliday or Teixera. There’s not too many of these players around and I can’t believe Dodgers fans or management wants to go back to the preManny batting lineup. I am seeing signs that he really wants to stay. I don’t think a 3 year $70 million offer is out of line. The Dodgers will make part of that back in Merchandise and ticket sales. I truely feel the short series is our best chance against the Cubs. We might as well find out how good we are right out of the gate. If we can take out the Cubs, it should get easier. Phils, - Angels.

You know the great thing about that starting line up Mark? - count em’ - five Dodgers - Loney, Dewitt, Martin, Kemp, Ethier. Six when Bills starts. That’s waht it is all about.

    GO DODGERS!!

  4. Bill Russell September 29, 2008 9:43 am

Ethier is not really home grown although it feels like he is. He came from Oakland in the Milton Bradley deal. That’s a good point and my hat’s off to the Dodgers scouting department and Logan White.

Bill - I know Andre wasn’t drafted as a Dodger but has never played in the bigs except with the Dodgers. I count him as Dodger as I do Kuroda, Saito and Park. Lambo and DeJesus on the way. If they don’t get sidetracked we could have seven out of eight position players as Dodgers and maybe three starters - Bills, Kershaw and MacDonald. I haven’t given up on Elbert yet.

    GO DODGERS!!

  6. Kelway From Boston September 29, 2008 11:58 am

So what the hell are we supposed to do about MANNY RAMIREZ??? …Because a whole bunch of writers that are PRO-RED SOX we’re supposed to just let him walk away??? HELL NO!!!… Am from Boston, I know what went on during all those years in Boston. The writers, because MANNY wouldn’t always provide interviews, Would portrait Manny as a Moron, careless hippy, mind you, JOHNNY DAMON was the same way but he wasn’t as vilified as MANNY. MANNY has said it himself, I WASN’T HAPPY THERE….. I WASN’T HAPPY THERE THE WHOLE TIME… EVERY LIL THING THE MEDIA JUST BLOWS IT UP.. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ERROR… FOLKS!!.. If we let Manny Ramirez walk away from L.A. you guys will regret it for the next 5 to 10 years.

  7. mario September 29, 2008 12:57 pm

Well said kelway, and why would that moron write a b.s. negative article towards manny, after all that he has done, 2 days before our playoff game? dude is a tool….

Even if the Dodgers keep Manny for X years — it would be great to have another “really good hitter” behind him, so that he sees good pitches.

I do not yet, think that Loney, Ethier, Martin, etc. is in the camp yet. They are good and will get better, but they are not in the “really good” cat. yet.

Gotta keep Manny–as Bill Russell says, who possibly wants to see the pre-Manny offense again?

Not keeping Manny would be dumber than the decisions to trade Piazza or to sign Drew rather than Beltre.

If LA goes deep in the playoffs, can Manny possibly be allowed to leave?

If LA goes deep in the playoffs, can McCourt possibly dump Ned in favor of Cashman?

  10. Gonzo September 29, 2008 9:05 pm

we don’t need cashman, we’ve got white whom I think has had alot to do with aquisitions than he gets credit for.

  11. russell September 29, 2008 9:36 pm

Manny lights this team up. There is no other player in .”! With his ability to play as well as he has played and charge up the young and yes , the OLDER players as he has .I sa 4 more years !

  12. russell September 29, 2008 9:43 pm

Oh and sweeney , you killed us when you played against us but you canlt hit a lick nowadays , I say send him to the instructional league

  13. Voldomer September 30, 2008 8:42 am

I’m not advocating for Cashman. Rather, I’m reacting to a recent article with speculation that McCourt was being coy about commenting on Ned’s future until he knows Cashman’s fate in NY. Personally, I can’t see how he could fire Ned if LA goes deep into the playoffs, though I also never thought he’d let DePo fire Tracy and then fire DePo too. (Disclaimer: I was thrilled when DePo was fired.)

  14. lawdog September 30, 2008 9:14 am

Manny saved Ned’s butt. The Dogs have to sign Manny long term. I’ve got a feeling he’ll still be hiting 30 homeruns and batting .300 when he’s 40. The man is an animal–like Randy Johnson. Some players just have the capability to play like they’re 28 when they’re 38.

The Dogs just ain’t the Dogs without Manny.

I think you nailed it mover. I’ll be surprised if there’s any difference in the actual post season squad and the one you’re predicting.

The only quibble–I doubt Furcal is ready to start. No doubt about the fact that he’s better than Berroa, but he missed most of the season and did not have a chance to rehab. in the minors to get his timing back. Besides, I might be the only one riding the BerroaBus, but I think he’s this year’s Mickey Hatcher. I’ll bet he hits over .300 in post season.

  15. lawdog September 30, 2008 9:16 am

Berroa is not Furcal, but he ain’t chopped liver!

    Vold,

Weren’t you suppposed to send me tickets for the games in Chicago?

If the playoffs were in Indy, I’d have sent you tickets…

  20. Voldomer September 30, 2008 2:01 pm

Mark, I wish! I was hoping Milwaukee would somehow win the central, as getting tickets there would have been much easier. Prices are insane with it being the Cubs, though.

If the bailout bill passes, maybe I can get another mortgage on my house and buy a pair. Which obstructed-view upper deck row are those on? We’ll need to allot another $1000 or so for parking.
