I Need A Hero

A hero is usually unexpected.  No one expected Kirk Gibson to be a hero.  They didn’t even expect him to play, but as he limped up to that plate, he was determined to fulfill that Destiny!  Somewhere on this Dodger team there is someone ready to take that mantle, step up and be a hero!  It’s not Manny - everyone expects it.  It’s someone that you wouldn’t expect.  Maybe it’s someone who we didn’t even expect to be there.  Maybe it’s Jeff Kent or Rafael Furcal, who were dead and buried.  Maybe it’s Matt Kemp who will realize his destiny in Chi-Town!  Maybe it D-Lowe and/or C-Bill who pitch like Koufax and Drysdale.

Maybe these are Destiny’s Dodgers!I borrowed the following from Bonnie Raitt and her song “I Need A Hero.”  I do admit to a “little” poetic license…

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where’s the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?

Isn’t there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn and I dream of what We need

We need a hero
I’m holding on for a hero ‘til the end of the night
He’s gotta be strong
And he’s gotta be fast
And he’s gotta be fresh for the fight
I need a hero
I’m holding on for a hero with all my might
He’s gotta be sure
And it’s gotta be soon
And he’s gotta be larger than life

Somewhere before midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There’s someone reaching for Destiny

Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It’s gonna take a superman to sweep the Cubs off their feet

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I could swear that there’s someone somewhere
Waiting for their Destiny
Through the wind and the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach
Like a fire in my blood

We need a hero
I’m waiting for that  hero ‘til the end of tomorrow night
He’s gotta be strong
And he’s gotta be fast
And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I’m holding on out a hero ‘til just after dark
He’s gotta be sure
And it’s gotta be soon
And he’s gotta hit the ball outta the park!

2008’s potential Gibby is Jeff Kent HANDS DOWN! The parallel is perfect:

    Bad knees - Check
Will not be in the starting lineup but may be available to pinch hit - Check
MVP - Check (granted, Kent did it in 2000 for the Giants, and Gibson was the NL MVP for the Dodgers in 88)
    Push Broom Moustache - CHECK!

Exactly what I would predict. I just wanted to hear someone else say it!

You may be right about Kent, but somehow I could see Blake DeWitt coming from nowhere to be our hero. You heard it here first.

    Or Ethier!

The Dogs would be better off if they left Surlyman off the post season roster. He’s a cancer!

I am ready to go and feel the Dodgers are as ready as they will ever be. Everyone is picking the Cubs and everyone is going to be wrong. With Furcal back in the lineup we are a much stronger team. Sorry Lawdog, but the Berroa mini bus must be parked for now. Just think of it as a minor oil change and tire rotation. The bubble blowing, chin haired, blue gloved, Wizard will be back in action soon.
Throw out the regular season stats because this is the post season now, where the pressure gets pushed up 10 notches. Derek Lowe knows pressure and has been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last month of the season. Dempsters glove twisten delivery will be tested by the Blue Dogs of LA. Manny will help us get at least one win out of CHI TOWN. If one victory is had, the series is ours and the Cubbies 100 year drought will continue. I will be at Saturday’s game. My first Baseball post season game ever. I am totally stoked. I went to the 2004 Super Bowl (nipple bowl) but this playoff series will rank right up there. GO BLUE

This is why they play the games and don’t go wins and losses on paper. 8)

Mark and I saw Lowe pitch in Chicago three years ago, in an afternoon game. He pitched a 1 hitter. That hit was the first hitter, in the first inning, a swinging bunt to 3rd base. Runner was safe — no hits the rest of the game allowed by Lowe.

A key question that Joe must have been mulling over the past couple of days. Does he start Kent at second base, to be able to have Jeff have 3 or 4 ABs to drive the ball? Or, does he go with DeWitt there, for more mobility at 2nd base.

Hummmmm . . . since Lowe is pitching the first game, I go with DeWitt. Lowe is a ground ball pitcher and if he is on, there will be bunches of balls for the infielders to pick.

I wait for Kent to hit at the right situation for game one.

I say this without checking Kent hitting against Dempster.

As said above — the experts and Vegas is picking the Cubs for all games and to win. Maybe that is good — so the Dodgers can get loose and just play the game. If the Dodgers were picked, I am afraid that some of our younger guys might play on their heels to protect themselves.

    We can do this.

TODAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT GAME OF THE SEASON!!

Winning game one would be huge.

Starting Raffy is risky because he hasn’t had a proper rehab …but I think the potential is great.

    Raffy
    Martin
    Manny
    Ethier
    Kemp
    Blake
    Loney
    DeWitt
    Lowe

    I’d take that.
    THINK BLUE!!

    Tonight’s Lineup:

    SS Furcal
    C Martin
    LF Ramirez
    RF Ethier
    1B Loney
    RF Kemp
    2B DeWitt
    3B Blake
    RH Lowe

Sounds like a winning lineup to me. 8)

Good combination of experience and youth. This Dodger team will match up with anyone. It’s all going to come down to pitching and patience at the plate. I couldn’t sleep last night trying to figure out the roster Torre would come up with. For the most part, it’s the right one, Proctor is the biggest surprise, but maybe there is something going on with him that we don’t know about. Anyway, Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Here is my optomism:
If we can beat the Cubs in a short series we should be able to beat anyone. I like Lowe and Bills against this power lineup. If Bills can keep the ball down we will be fine. Dempster is a mother at Wrigley so we need good ABs from everyone to get his pitch count up.
Raffy is my wild card. If he is (somewhat) healthy this will be fun to watch. If he is bad we can’t afford to wait, pull him and take our chances with Nomar or Berroa. In this short series, if we are not willing to act fast we will get burried!
    Go Dodgers Go!!
