CHANGE IN STAFF

According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.COM  longtime trainer Stan Johnston was dismissed on Wednesday. The popular Johnston, a 23-year employee of the organization, served as the Major League team’s head trainer from 2000-06. But with the hiring of Stan Conte last winter as director of medical services and head trainer, Johnston’s role changed to assistant athletic trainer, a title also held by Todd Tomczyk, who was hired last winter.

Johnston also was the Dodgers’ assistant trainer in Los Angeles from 1996-2000 and was head trainer for the organization’s Triple-A affiliate, Albuquerque, from 1989-95. He joined the organization in 1985 at rookie-level Great Falls and spent the next three years at Class A Bakersfield.

Diamond Leung of the Press-Enterprise reports more:

The Dodgers did not offer contracts to assistant athletic trainer Stan Johnston and strength and conditioning coach Doug Jarrow for the 2008 season. Johnston had been in the organization since 1985. Jarrow had finished his second season in the role (and dressed the part as Batman in a recent hazing ritual).

…bound to happen!  They’ll latch on somewhere else.  We may never know, but I would think it may have been a clash of strategies that caused this…. that and all the injuries.  Did you really expect Ned to fire Conte?

He also reported that Tony Abreu’s surgery went well. A torn abdominal muscle was found, and Abreu will be discharged tomorrow and return to Los Angeles.

From the Hawaiian Winter League:

Josh Bell is hitting a blistering .375

Ryan Rogowski is at .273

Jamie Hoffman and Russ Hoffman are at .250

From Scout.Com. Bill Shelly reports:

The relationship between the Dodgers and the Jacksonville Suns has been a beneficial one for both sides. Now, the Suns are to be the Southern League’s candidate for two important annual awards, a direct result of that relationship.

The league has nominated the Suns for the John H. Johnson award and the Larry MacPhail award. The Johnson trophy is given each year to the team that best exemplifies the highest standards of a baseball franchise. The MacPhail honor goes to the club that has outstanding promotional work.

Each league is allowed to nominate one franchise for the honors with the general managers of the cubs doing the selecting. The ultimate winner will be decided by a panel with the awards to be announced and presented at the winter meetings. This is the second straight year that the Suns have been nominated for the Johnson award.

The Dodgers have always provided the franchise with a winning team since becoming associated with it. In a city which has an NFL franchise, the fans have still supported this AA team, which has set several attendance records and once again lead the league in that department, drawing 396, 012 while winning 80 games this past season.
