2006 DODGER ANALYSIS – PART 1

Assuming that Ned Colletti is finished shaping this team (yes, I know – that may not be a safe asumption), here’s how i see the 2006 Dodgers shaping up:

INFIELD – The infield is set with Nomar at 1B, Kent at 2B, Furcal at SS and Mueller at 3B.  I seriously doubt that monster preseason’s by LaRoche, Loney or Guzman could unseat any of these vets.  At the present time Aybar, Robles, Saenz and Choi are the subs.  In my opinion, at least one of those players will not make the squad.  Robles has to be a lock, due to his ability to play SS, and Seanz is a lock as a Pinch Hitter.  Choi or Aybar could be traded or Aybar could be sent back to AAA, leaving Choi as a LH Pinch Hitter.  Unless a trade partner emerges in the next few weeks, I look for this to play out in the Spring.  We could see some late trades…

CATCHING – Navarro flashed immense promise as a rookie last year, but many Dodger officials believe that Russ Martin is a better all-around player.  I happen to believe that as well!  I watched Martin in Spring Training last year and was extremely impressed with his work ethic, footwork, speed and throwing.  I also watched him throughout the year and became even more impressed with him.  He also carries himself as a confident leader.  Martin will be our catcher – the only question is – WHEN?  Alomar should fit in well as a backup, tutor, coach and pinch hitter for a year.  If Martin has a monster Spring, can he be denied?   I don’t think so.  What happens to Navarro then?  If Navarro and Martin both have great Springs, could Alomar become a full-time coach?  I think that is a possibility!
